The police officer paced back and forth looking out,his brows furrowed with concern. Maybe he's looking for someone else. It couldn't have been that serious that Nelson would even consider to press charges, could it? This didn't come across Dax who hopped out of the car nonchalantly, eagerly leading me to an open area in the park. The suspecting cop right way called out on us as we entered the grassy area. I tried my hardest to act natural and remain calm but the cop seemed to grow closer and closer. Taking notice,Dax once again grabbed my hand and began to run,no direction intended. Just to get away from the cops.
"Hey! You kids come back here!",the stealthy officer screeched.Just before we scampered around the corner, I saw the same police officer speak into a device of some sort. I was way too far to actually hear what he was saying, however. To make sure they couldn't easily locate us,we made continuous turns, left and right among numerous streets until we reached a construction site.
"What are we doing here?", I demanded with my teeth clenched, firmly pressed together. All we seemed to be doing was running and now we stop at some unknown site for no apparent reason at Dax's request. Great. He sighed.
"Would the police suspect anyone to be hiding at a construction site for a house?", he shook his head in disbelief. I gave no response knowing he was right. He entered the site dragging me along with and wandered around the property. There were one or two builders here and there but they were too busy to acknowledge our presence. As we exited the actual house to go into the backyard,Dax seemed to recognize one of the workers immediately and started to talk to him as if they were best friends or something. Turns out that was his uncle, the head construction worker. He explained our current situation and asked if we could stay here for a while.
"Dong. I know you're young and this is what kids do but I have a business to run. I don't want to have to tell your tita that I have to spend more time building because I was looking out for you and your gelpren.", he rubbed his stubbly chin. Oh,that Filipino accent sounds so nostalgic. I looked over to Dax whose cheeks were now red with embarrassment. A construction worker that was screwing in nails nearby, eavesdropped, and suggested that we could hide in a church nearby to conceal our location. It was dumb but genius. Without saying a goodbye,I ran out of the construction site,Dax following me close by. He would look at me once in a while but I wouldn't notice because of the determined look I held on my face whenever I ran. When you're athletic like me,you have to be concentrated. Keep your head in the game. This is partly why I most of the times, come in 1st at track meets.
After a couple minutes,we stopped in front of a towering Catholic chapel embellished with marble columns and carvings. I believed I visited here once r twice before with my lola but was uncertain. It looked as if it belonged in somewhere foreign like Italy. I flung the door open, out of breath, and nearly collapsed onto the carpeted floor. Instead, I slouched against a wall covered with flyers and such, making a good THUD noise. Above us,the sound of steady snoring can be heard and I realized that the priest happened to life in a room above the main level. Probably to keep watch. Oops. Dax gained recognition of his surroundings and whispered that we needed to go somewhere else and it had to be done quietly so the priest wouldn't awaken. I peered out a stained glass window and saw no cops were in sight.
"Don't you think we should go back to the car now. I mean, they can't be trying to look for us for that fucking long". Without answering,Dax opened the door and casually walked out. Our hands found each other, fingers intertwined once again as if this were a normal thing now. We walked to the car leisurely and talked. Nothing in specific however: music, boba, dance, completely irrelevant things. It felt good to finally talk to Dax without having to constantly run and hide. I guess you could say we were free. Free to roam the streets. Free to do whatever the hell we wanted at this point. It really didn't matter now. After walking for quite some time, the red car came into view and I,without even thinking, gripped Dax's hand and ran to the car. You honestly didn't now how happy I was to sit down. I swore I burned 600 calories from running alone. As he ignited the engine,I noticed it was 5:30. My parents were expecting me. Well they have been expecting me for well over two hours now. "I need to go home. Like right now.", I sputtered. Dax only chuckled saying something about cute I am when I'm scared. Once we left the park, I engulfed myself in my hoodie, taking out my arms from the sleeves, and getting cozy.
"This didn't go as planned", he said, making it sound like he were distraught. I could see an obvious smile plastered on his face although his muscles were tense, unable to relax at the thought that we wouldn't be running again. My hand reached for his cheek and playfully slapped him.
"Yeah! Thank you for insisting that I go ditch school with you,second-handedly make me kick Mr.Nelson in the balls, almost getting us arrested, and have me run like 3 miles."
"You didn't hate it,did you?"
"Not entirely, I suppose", I admitted. Although he hauled me into all sorts of trouble, I do sadly admit that it was fun.. kind of.
"Exactly." I rolled my eyes and grabbed a Snickers bar that I always kept handy, from my backpack. Breaking off a piece and popping it into my mouth, I fed Dax the rest, sneaking in a bit for myself sometimes.
"Hey,do you want Starbucks? You know as a 'Sorry I ruined your life' present?, he asked, a Starbucks present up ahead.
"You already know my answer." We ended up sharing a grande Green Tea Frap which I ate all the whipped cream off of. My secret indulgence. Once we reached my house, I rushed to the entrance hoping nobody would notice. Heck, I'm 3 hours late,of course they were bound to notice and afterwards interrogate me. Dax stayed by the curb until I entered the house, motioning him to drive off. As I closed the door steadily, my mom faced me, her eyes filled with curiosity as to where I have been for the past 3 where and and probably who I was with. I lied that I needed to finish my projects and later got Starbucks, which was partially true, with my project partner. My mom merely shrugged snd returned to the living room to continue her show. I walked upstairs laughing, reminiscing about the day. Dax was something else. Unofficially, my 'something else'. I shook my head clear of thoughts and jumped onto my much missed bed, carefree.Authors Note: Hey lovelies!
