CHAPTER SEVEN
LETTING GO

In the year: 1939

THEA zipped her last suitcase, pulling it off the bed and into the hallway of the Cullen home. Thea felt blind, she'd never left her hometown before so moving to Hoquiam, Washington, was a huge shift for her.

It's been a week since she'd discovered her new ability, the ability to shape-shift and mimic the appearance and voice of anyone she pleases.

Of course, the ability still wasn't coming naturally to Thea. She either had to be put into a stressful state or be very focused for the ability to work.

Carlisle rounds the corner, "good morning."

Thea doesn't greet him, she didn't trust any of them, not Rosalie, Esme, and somewhat Emmett, and especially not Carlisle.

"Before we leave—I would like to show you something."

Thea squints, "show me what?"

Carlisle twist the ring in his finger, "c'mon." She begins walking through the front door and Thea couldn't help be but curious, following him out.

This was the last place Thea expected to be. A hospital. "Why are we here?"

"Esme believed this would give you some sort of closure," Carlisle avoids eye contact, "I told her I didn't think you were ready but..."

"What are you talking about?" Thea grows more suspicious by his weird behavior.

Carlisle steps out of the Cadillac before opening the passenger side door for Thea. He offers his hand but Thea gets out herself.

Thea wore a long black coat with a fur collar. Gloves that matches and shiny flats. Her hair was placed into a neat bun.

The newborn vampire follows him inside and she was immediately hit with the scent of the hospital. She could heart heartbeats and heels clicking against the clean white tiles.

She didn't get more time to examine before Carlisle's voice led her throughout the hospital. They come to a stop at a locked door and Carlisle pulls out a key to unlock it.

Carlisle steps back so Thea could enter first and she doesn't carefully, unknowing to what she would find.

Then she heard it. A tiny cry.

She steps further into the narrow hallway, seeing the rectangular piece of glass that let her see directly into the other side.

Babies laid on small beds, all seeming peacefully asleep except for one.

One had bright earthy green eyes that were similar to Thea's when she was human.

Thea stood frozen in her steps, "is that..." she snaps her wide eyes to Carlisle. He wore an expression of empathy and nods.

A baby boy. A beautiful baby boy.

"I made sure he was going to a loving family, one that would take care of him." Carlisle stuffs his hands into his pockets and leans on the window himself. "They're good people."

"My boy should be in my arms." Thea whispers to herself, her eyes falling away from the window.

Thea knew she couldn't. This was no fairytale. Her baby couldn't grow up and be with her forever. And she would rather let him grow up without her than let him grow up to be stuck as a vampire, forever watching the world kill itself.

Carlisle didn't expect Thea to say what she was going to say next. "Thank you." She whispers, "...for letting me see my baby."

She could stay here and look at his innocent eyes forever, but she wouldn't. It would only hurt her more. "I would like to leave now." She tells Carlisle.

So they did.

And As she walked away, the bitter bite of the devil sank its teeth deeper into her soul, leaving her consumed by sorrow.
