Rose's POV

I just stayed home the whole day, after James revealed to me what he was and that he was going to protect me. The day was pretty much uneventful except for when James thought I'd fallen asleep and had decided to drift through the wall. I got up swiftly and quietly. I followed him once outside and saw he was headed to the graveyard. I shuddered but kept following him nonetheless. He stopped at a gravestone and I knew it was his gravestone. The black cloaked thing that haunted my dream last night was waiting there for him. I was close enough to hear what they were saying and so far they had not seen me.

"Why are you not guarding Rose?"  The figure asked in a menacing voice. "I told you that if she dies, you'll regret it."

"I won't be gone long, she is napping right now so I thought I'd tell you that I told her I'd be protecting her." James defended himself.

"Did she give you any resistance in the matter?" The figure asked.

"I'll say she did. She wanted to protect herself." James chuckled.

"She's tough." The figure said approvingly. The whole conversation had me confused. I was wondering why this dark looking creature wanted to protect me and why he would threaten James if I died.

"Excuse me, but what are you and why do you want to protect me?" I asked, stepping out of my hiding place. I wrinkled my nose, only just noticing that deathly smell again. The two of them jumped, they really thought they'd been alone.

"Rose, what are you doing here?" James asked, looking horrified as he turned to see me standing there with my arms crossed.

The creature smiled at me and answered my question. "I am the Grim Reaper. I kill people when they're ready to die." My eyes widened. I had not expected that answer.

"You're kidding right?" I asked, not sure if he was messing with me. "And you didn't answer my other question."

"No I am not kidding, but I would give anything to be human like you." He said sadly. I was speechless at this. Being the master of death would be one cool thing and yet he wanted to be a weak little human like me.

"Why?" I asked, tilting my head to the side.

"I-it is complicated." He stuttered and he started twirling his sythe.

"You could kill someone with that." I said, annoyed that he had not fully answered my question. He didn't seem to want to tell me.

"Because I'm in love with you!" He burst out and dropped his sythe. My jaw just dropped as did my body as it hit the ground. I didn't faint but just sat hard on the ground as the wind knocked me over. The master of death was in love with me, a human.

"I've got to go!" I shouted and ran really fast out of there.

Grim's POV

She just ran. I was sad because I'd been hoping that she wouldn't be afraid of me. I had been hoping that she'd see me and fall in love with me. I wanted so badly to cry and yet I could not. "It was a lot to take in." James tried to console me. I didn't answer. "She just needs time to think, she'll come around, don't worry." James tried again. That's when I lashed out at him.

"Just leave me! Go protect Rose!" I yelled at him, the wind picking up and whipping his hair back. There was a storm starting to brew. That's what happens when I get extremely angry or frustrated. James ran after Rose, knowing I was in one of my bad moods. I sat there for a while and thought about ways to get Rose to see past the whole death thing and love me. I came up with a plan that hopefully would not fail.
