What is it?

It means putting organisms (living things) into groups.

The main structure of classification is:

1)Kingdom- There are 5 main kingdoms for living organisms

2)Phylum

3)Class

4)Order

5)Family

6)Genus

7)Species: A group of organisms that can produce fertile (they can also have children) offspring.

NOTE:  Remember the order as it is a typical exam question. This mnemonic helps-
Keep Pond Clean Or frogs Get Sick

The Binomial system:
This is the combination of the genus And species. This two part name is given to all living beings. For example the two part name for human beings is Homo Sapiens.

The Binomial system helps:

Identify a species

Study a species

Conserve a species

Phylum:

This is wether an organism is a vertebrate or an invertebrate. A vertebrate has a backbone but an invertebrate does not.
