Kagami's pov
There it is. The Higurashi shrine. I stood at the bottom of the stairs, panting heavily. Maybe I should've taken his offer. I sighed, deciding to put up with it. Looking up at the stairs in determination, I trudged up the steps with my bags. I should see Kagome first.
"Kagami, is that you dear?"
I looked up to the sight of Kagome's mom standing at the top of the steps. I immediately put my bags down and ran up to her. "Mrs. Higurashi!"
The woman placed a hand on her cheek and smiled sweetly at me. "Oh, it's been so long. How are you?"
"I'm okay," I said while matching her expression. "I was wondering if Kagome was still here?"
"I'm sorry but you just missed her." She gave a sympathetic frown. "She went back to the Feudal Era not to long ago."
"Did she?" I frowned as well, feeling a bit discouraged. "I see..." Did they decide to continue without me?
Before I could continue further in self-doubt, I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. "You should hurry dear, I'm sure they're waiting for you."
"Huh?"
"Kagome's been so distraught lately and I wasn't sure why. Inuyasha has been over much more recently but even he looked quite down. They miss you." she said with a reassuring smile.
My heart swelled at her words. It was the final push I needed to chase what I wanted. "Of course! Um, may I ask for a favor, Mrs. Higurashi?"
"What is it?"
"My brother. May I ask you to watch over him for me?" I shyly asked. I knew he could take care of himself but I didn't want him to feel alone anymore. "I just want him to be okay while I'm gone."
The woman lightly chuckled as she agreed without hesitation. "Certainly. He's such a sweet boy and Sota has grown quite attached to him. Our family will take good care of him for you."
I could feel all my worries wash away with her words of reassurance. I was truly lucky to have met Kagome and her loving family. Her mom was the best. "Thank you so much!" I said while bowing in gratitude. "I'll be leaving now."
"Take care dear. Watch over Kagome for me."
I gave an energetic nod. "Yes ma'am!"
"Also..." I raised a brow when she stepped closer to only be taken aback when she wrapped her arms around me in a warm comforting embrace. "I wish you well dear. Stay safe."
My body relaxed as I succumbed to her warmth. "Thank you." It has been so long since I felt a mother's touch that I found myself struggle to pull away. Kagome's mom was truly the sweetest soul out there. It's a shame that I couldn't spend more time with her.
After saying our farewells, I went inside the shrine and stood in front of the Bone Eater's Well. I stared down into the darkness with an unwavering expression. It was now or never. My brows furrowed as I sat on the edge with all my bags. Inuyasha, you won't escape from me this time. "Alright, here I go."
3rd person pov
Back in the Feudal Era, the gang stood outside Kaede's hut, assumingly ready to continue their journey. However, the vibes were rather off as none of them seemed enthusiastic about departing. Kagome sat on the steps with a frown as she seemed to be in her own little world. Inuyasha was no different as he sat on the log fence surrounding the village. He kept his gaze in the direction of the well as if expecting someone. Sango looked over to Miroku with a disheartened expression as she asked for his opinion. "What should we do? The longer we wait, the more time Naraku has to get stronger."
