The door swung open right after Matt rang the doorbell. It was Paul, who smiled at him cheerfully. “Hey Matt, come on in.”
Matt closed the door behind him and hung his coat on the rack, before following Paul to the living room.Josh was there setting up the TV, scrolling through different movies to find the one they were going to watch.
He smiled at Matt when he saw him. “Matt, good to see you're here already.”“Hello.” Matt said, suddenly feeling a bit awkward. Wasn’t it a little weird he was joining in on their family night like this?
“Hi, Matt.” He made eye contact with the dark-haired boy and all of a sudden it didn’t feel so weird anymore. It actually felt… right. Before he knew it, he was on the couch, the movie about to start.
Josh and Paul had taken place on the other side of the couch, while Josh informed Matt they were going to watch the movie Rapunzel.“Hey, you weren't supposed to tell him that yet!” Charley entered the room with a platter full of snacks. He placed it on the salon table that was standing in front of them. Matt instantly noticed a theme of purple, yellow and green.
There were cupcakes with purple frosting, all kinds of fruit, like green apples, which made Josh laugh, pineapple and grapes. There was some bread in the shape of a braid, which you could cut pieces off and coat with a thick layer of all sorts of tasty sauces. The drinks were blue with little paper boats stuck to the top.
“Lovely, Charley.” Josh said.
Paul gave him a nod of approval, clearly impressed just like Matt. It had definitely taken hours to make this.
Matt suddenly felt himself getting a bit choked up, just thinking about Charley making all of this for his family and him.He knew what Charley did was bad, but somewhere he also had this lovely side. He had shown himself to be sweet and kind, something Matt never thought he would be. There was so much more to this guy than he knew, that was for sure.
“Do you like Rapunzel?” Charley said, sitting down besides Matt. His arm brushed Matt’s elbow, causing Matt’s entire arm to feel like it caught on fire.
He awkwardly cleared his throat. “No, I’ve never watched it, actually.”
Charley looked like Matt had just personally punched him in the gut. “That’s a joke?”Matt laughed, shortly. “No, my mom didn’t really let me watch movies growing up, so…”
Charley shook his head. “And I thought I had a bad childhood.”
The big boxes next to the TV suddenly started making noise, and when Matt looked to the screen, he saw a logo appearing.“We better start watching it then.” Josh smiled at him, putting the remote down.
After logos, there was a very cute story about a king and queen, who got a miracle baby.“This is so cute.” Matt said to Charley, just as the evil witch woman came in and STOLE the baby??
“This is about kidnapping?!” Matt was shocked to his core. He always thought Disney movies were some cute, sweet stories about princesses and fairy tales.Charley nodded. “Basically, yeah.”
Matt shook his head and crossed his arms in front of his chest. “Well, I wasn’t expecting that.”The horror continued, as he discovered she had been kept up in that castle for years.
“This is terrible.” He said and Charley smiled at him, clearly enjoying his astonishment.Thankfully, a cheerful song followed and Matt could finally settle down a bit and start to actually enjoy this movie.
He looked to his left, where Charley was silently mouthing the words to the song.
