Chapter One
"Order for Ryan!" I shout into the crowd of college students waiting for their drinks at the local coffee shop I work at on campus. It is called the Rosebud Cafe and is an extremely popular place to spend time or study. The cafe has a new drink of the week that always seems to go over well. This week is a marshmallow cappuccino.
"Thanks, Soph." Ryan winks at me as he takes his Americano from the counter. "Always the best when you're working."
I laugh and shake my head. "And you are always a suck up. Still hoping for a free drink?"
"Can't hurt to try." He smirks as he leaves a nice tip and heads back to his crowd of friends.
Ryan O'Connor. Mr. Dark, Tall and Handsome. Co-captain of the Brooksworth Mavericks. All the puck bunnies love to throw themselves at him and hope they will be the lucky ones to end up in his bed for the night. All they get out of him is flirting. Innocent flirting because they don't know that Ryan and I are secretly seeing each other.
I'm sure you're wondering how a nerd like me is currently seeing one of the most popular guys on campus? Well Ryan and I are from the same small town that is a few hours West of Duluth. We went to the same high school but hung out in different crowds. Him, Mr. Popular, and me, Nerdy Girl. This summer that all changed. I tutored kids at the school where my little brother was going through hockey camp that Ryan was coaching for. Our paths crossed when he took an interest in my brother, and well things escalated after that. We hung out, went on a few dates, and hooked up before coming back to start our senior year of college.
Ryan wants to keep our relationship on the down low for the time being. I'm okay with it for now as I just started to break out of my shell this last year. I ditched my glasses for contacts, learned how to style my brown wavy hair, and actually bought clothes that flatter my body well. I have even attended a few parties with my roommate.
Speaking of said roommate, "Beth, I'm gonna take my 15-minute break."
I washed my hands and stepped out into the alleyway where a pair of large hands wrapped around my waist. "There you are. I didn't think you'd be able to get away."
"Sorry, we got really busy. I had to wait for a few more orders to be done, but I'm here now." I look up to Ryan's beautiful face. Dark brown eyes, wavy blonde hair, and a smile that makes my stomach flutter.
He leans down to kiss me, and I can't help but smile. "You taste like marshmallows. How is the new drink?" he laughs, licking his lips.
I scrunch my lips to the side. "It's not too bad. I don't think marshmallows really belong in a cappuccino drink though."
He leans down to kiss me again, slowly pushing me to the wall of the cafe. My hands reach to the back of his head trying to pull him closer even though I don't think that's possible.
"Easy tiger, I want to enjoy this." he smirks.
When it comes to Ryan, I can't help but lose control. The way he makes me feel is something I've never experienced, and I can't get enough. "We don't have much time for slow and steady, Ryan." I look up at him through my dark lashes.
"Oh, I can make this 15-minutes very useful with slow and steady, Soph." he pushes me back up against wall, and grabs my butt causing me to wrap my legs around his waist. "15-minutes is all I need to make you feel good."
Ryan was right about only needing 15-minutes to make me feel good as I walk back into the cafe, "Looks like someone had a mood boast in the alleyway." Beth grins. "How was Mr. Hot stuff?"
I blush. Beth doesn't know who Mr. Hot stuff is and she'd lose her shit if she knew it was Ryan. "Good as always."
"One day you'll have to tell me who it is." she says.
"It's not like we are official or anything." I explain. "It's still new and I want to see where it goes."
Beth looks like she doesn't believe me which is far as I can't tell her it's Ryan or he'll be upset with me. "Fine. I'll drop it for now, but since things are still new, you should come to the Hockey house party with me tonight!"
"You know I'm still new to the party scene and the hockey house parties might be a little too crazy for me still."
"No way!" she counters back. "It's the perfect place for you to finally let go and enjoy your college time!"
"I'll think about it." It would be nice to see if Ryan and I could sneak off somewhere to be alone. We haven't had much time together now that hockey has started up for the season, and I really want to squeeze more time in with him. Finally go official and be public.
The cool fall air hits my face as I leave the coffee shop and head to my car. I get into my car and head back to the apartment I rent 5-minutes from campus with Beth. We have been roommates since freshmen year and have become best friends due to it. We decided to live off campus this year and I am so glad we did. I really enjoy the peace and quiet we get most of the time at our apartment.
As I opened the door to an empty apartment, I started to feel like I am missing out on something. Maybe going to the party at the hockey house tonight would be good for my mental health. I have two more years of normal college before I am thrown out into the real world going to medical school. I've always dreamed of being a doctor. I don't know what I want to specialize in yet, but I am hoping to figure that out within the next year or two.
I set my bag down on the kitchen table and heard the apartment door open. "Hey Soph, are you going to come with me to the party tonight?" Beth asks as she closes the door.
I sigh. I don't really want to, but I should go. I could use some more Ryan time. "Yes, I will go."
Beth shrieks with excitement. "You have to let me do your hair and choose your outfit! The hockey house parties are not your regular type of parties!"
"Fine, but don't make me regret this." I sigh. I really hope she doesn't go overboard with trying to make look "sexy".
"You won't! I promise, you'll be asking me to do this for you more often." she smirks.
Oh boy. I'm a bit scared now. Beth only smirks when she has something sneaky up her sleeve.
About an hour later, Beth has me all "dolled up" and ready to go. I'm wearing a black crop top with a pair of high waisted jeggings that show my curves off in all the right places, and a pair of black high heels that make me a couple of inches taller. My long wavy brown hair has been tamed and actually looks amazing! I'll have to ask Beth her secret so I can achieve this look more often. Beth applied a bit of makeup by giving me a classic look with mascara, gray eye shadow to give me the smokey eye look, and red lipstick. I'm a little unsure of the red lipstick as it feels like a bold move that'll get me more attention when I only want one persons attention tonight.
"Damn Soph, you look hot! I'd fuck you if I swung that way!" Beth wiggled her eyebrows at me.
I shook my head with a slight laugh, "Thanks, I think?"
Beth rolled her eyes, "Learn to take a compliment once in a while, would you? You look amazing, and I'm very pleased with how it turned out."
I glanced at myself in the mirror again looking at myself more closely, Beth was right. I did look amazing. I feel more confident and ready to step out of my comfort zone. I've worked hard on making myself feel less nerdy when I started college with trying to be more confident in how I look and feel. Going to a party at the hockey house is a good way to test myself.
"Thanks for making me feel and look confident." I smiled.
"That is what best friends are for!" Beth smiled back. "Now let's go have some fun!"
I slipped my phone and key into my jean pocket, and headed out the door to what I thought was going to be a fun night. Only to realize it wasn't.
