"Seven multiplied by two, minus four. Anyone got the answer?" A soft tone of woman's voice rang through the clearing. "Oh come on guys, anyone? Carl, Sophia?" Kids seated in front of her sat in silence as she was talking to them in some mystic, foreign language.
"It's not that hard. I'm sure Kai knows the answer, right?" She turned to the 30 years old man who just brought some more wood to the bonfire.
"Sorry Carol, Merle made sure I know more about meth than math." He shrugged, Immediately coming across her disappointed stare.
It's been around a month since world went to shit. Kai along with his childhood friends, Merle and Daryl spent last few weeks in a camp outside Atlanta. They weren't here to make friends nor to get help in surviving. They were doing just fine on their own. But they needed supplies. More guns, more food and that RV which seemed to be much more comfortable than some stinky tent.
When Kai stepped across this group he immediately noticed it's potential. It was like a bag of gold guarded by women, children and only few men. He explained his strategy to Dixons and came back to the camp, offering their "help" for a place to sleep in. His plan seemed to be pretty successful. Thrust of the group was not so hard to gain as they had an advanced hunter in their ranks.
The oldest among them – Merle – was out in the city, scavenging with few other people. Daryl spent another day in the woods hunting, as the youngest – Kai – helped with some everyday stuff.
"I still can't believe how you ended up with them. Two rednecks being friends with Asian boy." Lori stated, sitting beside her son.
"We were neighbors as kids, their father used to drink with my stepdad." Kai didn't want to say too much about himself.
"But still, every Asian kid I knew always hang out with other smart kids." Kai's gaze immediately pierced through Amy who just let herself go crazy with her words.
"Then it must mean I'm not smart enough to hang out with those "smart kids"." He scoffed visibly annoyed by her statement.
"That's not what I – "
"Shut it, don't make it any worse." He cut her mid sentence.
At the age of 30 Kai was already used to all of those stereotypes. At some point in his life he wished for them to be true, but he couldn't do shit with the fact he wasn't born lucky. His family moved out from Korea when he was only 3 years old. American dream turned out to be false as soon as his father got diagnosed with cancer and left his family with sick amount of hospital loans. His mother wasn't the biggest fan of work and not so long after his dads death she met Kais personal nightmare – Richard Smith. The man who was neighbor of Dixons and introduced his mom to drugs. From that moment story of Jennie Kim started heading to it's very end.
She stopped being a mom to Kai as soon as she began her passage with opiates. 5 years old Kim would spent whole days outside, hanging out with other kids, eventually meeting his soon to be best friend – two years older Daryl Dixon.
They spent their childhood together, ignoring mean comments coming from Daryl's older brother – Merle. Eventually Merle grew to accept Asian boys existing, as he spent most of his time alongside his baby brother.
Their "happy time" ended pretty quickly as Kais mother found out about new, much cheaper drug called blues. She got herself into zombie – like state, forgetting about her 12 years old son, leaving him on mercy of her abusive husband. And even though Kai seemed to be a quite fragile kid, he was filled with inner anger. Young boy would constantly get into fights, just as troubles kept his side 24/7. And that mean kid was being raised by even meaner stepfather. Richard Smith only seeked on occasions to go violent. Being late? Allowing the house to get dirty? Making his stepdad bored? All of that was a perfect excuse to beat the living shit out of teenage boy.
