-CHAPTER FOUR- Preston's arrest

Later that evening, the doorbell rang at Preston and Priscilla's house. In the driveway two police vehicles had been parked.

'Coming,' Preston called out.

When he opened the door, he was confronted by Sherriff Blubs, Stan, Ford, Mabel, Pacifica and me.

'Sherriff Blubs? What's the occasion?' Preston asked shakily.

'Mr. Preston Northwest you are hereby placed under arrest for the assault of Pacifica Elise Northwest. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you?' Sherriff Blubs asked.

'What? Whatever that bitch told you is a lie!' Preston bellowed.

'Take him away, boys,' Sherriff Blubs said after he had handcuffed him. 'You are truly human garbage.'

Preston glared at Pacifica. The hatred in his eyes was palpable.

'I will kill you bitch!' Preston screamed while he lunged at her.

The police officers grabbed him before he could get to her.

'I hope you rot in prison; you are a pathetic excuse for a father.' Tears streamed down Pacifica's cheeks.

'You are going away for a very long time, Preston. Get in the car,' Sherriff Blubs ordered.

The police officers shoved him into the police vehicle and drove away.

Mabel hugged Pacifica. We all looked at each other in shock. We had always known that Pacifica's circumstances were dire, but today we had come face to face with the evil that was her father. To comfort Pacifica, Mabel steered the conversation in a different direction.

'I heard you and Durland got married, Sherriff Blubs. How is married life treating you?' she asked.

'Very well we have been trying to adopt a child. I have always wanted to be a father,' Sherriff Blubs answered.

'How wonderful. It seems our future is going to be filled by babies. Melody is pregnant.'

'Please convey my heartfelt congratulations to her. I have to leave, because Durland will kill me if I am late for dinner again. See you,' the sheriff said as he got into his patrol car and drove off.

'Now that the human trash has been taken out, we can all relax. He won't hurt you anymore,' Stan said putting his arm around Pacifica.

'He will have to go through my dead body before he hurts you,' I said.

'Thanks guys.' Pacifica smiled through her tears.

'Can she stay with us for the time being Gruncle Stan?' I asked.

'Eh why not, seems she is not a rotten egg after all. If Soos agrees, it's fine by me,' Stan answered. He retrieved his cell phone from his jacket pocket and dialled Soos' number.

'Hallo this is the Mystery Shack. How can I help you, dude?' Soos answered.

Stan quickly explained what had happened.

'I feel better knowing that Preston is in jail. Pacifica can stay here as long as she needs to,' Soos said.

'Thanks, I'm sure she appreciates it.'

'See you later dude,' Soos said and hung up.

'Looks like you are staying with us kid,' Stan said.

'Thank you, Stan,' she said, and he could see the relief in her eyes.

'Not a problem, kid.'

They climbed into the car and drove to the Mystery Shack.

'I feel more at home with you guys than I ever did living with my parents,' Pacifica said.

'Now that you are going to stay with us, we can hang out with you anytime you like. We can have a slumber party tomorrow. We can talk trash about our ex-boyfriends, and our current crushes. Ooh, especially celebrity crushes. I know all about your cru...never mind. Anyway, it's going to be incredibly fun with you around. Tomorrow night we can invite Grenda, Candy and perhaps even Wendy. Dipper when is your date with Wendy?' Mabel asked.

'It's tomorrow afternoon at half past twelve,' I said.

They were silent for the rest of the way back to the Mystery Shack. When they arrived, it was already half past ten.

'What a night. I'm dead tired. It's been a long day, and I'm going to bed,' Stan said.

'I'm with you on that, Stan. I'm also going to sleep,' Ford agreed.

'Come, Pacifica let's go to sleep. You can do with a good night's rest,' I said.

Stan and Ford went to their room while Mabel, Pacifica and I trudged upstairs to our room.

'Pacifica, you can sleep in my bed for the time being. I will get a mattress to sleep on,' I said.

'We can just share the same bed.'

Mabel and I looked at each other and then at Pacifica.

'Did I say that out loud? I didn't mean it. I meant Mabel and I,' muttered Pacifica.

'Don't worry, Pacifica. You and I can sleep in the same bed. Not a problem,' Mabel told her.

'Thanks, Mabel. Let's go to sleep, I'm dead tired.' Pacifica refused to look at me.

Mabel disappeared into the bathroom and came back wearing pyjamas dotted with pink and grey cats. She got into bed and pulled the covers over her shoulders.

'Goodnight,' she said and closed her eyes. Within five minutes, she was snoring loud enough to wake the dead.

'That didn't take long,' I said.

'Does she always snore this loud?' Pacifica asked.

'Yes, you would think that I've gotten used to it, but I haven't. Now, it's your turn. Good luck,' I answered.

'I'm sure I can manage. Seems like the only thing that was good living with my parents was the fact that they never snored,' Pacifica said

'Let's get to bed. It's late. We can chat in the morning.'

'Goodnight, Dipper.'

At exactly midnight when everyone was asleep, a strange demonic voice echoed throughout the halls.

'Wewill have a lot of fun this summer won't we Pines. I can't wait to have funwith my old friends,' Bill laughed and disappeared into the depths of thenight.
