The next morning Pacifica woke up first. I was still fast asleep. She searched for fruit bearing bushes, found some and picked all the ripe berries. She carried them back to our campsite and left them on a flat rock. She grabbed a bow and arrow from her backpack and set off. She was looking for a small animal she could easily bring down. She saw a partridge in the underbrush and aimed at it.

'Nice and steady Pacifica nice and steady,' she said to herself.

She let go of the arrow. It hit the bird.

'Breakfast!' she said, dancing a little jig.

                                     ***

I woke up alone. Pacifica had disappeared. Worry gnawed at me. I got up and headed towards the lake she had found the day before. She was walking out of the lake when I found her.

'How long have you been you standing there?' she asked.

'Don't worry, I just woke up. Fancy a swim with a nerd?'

'I don't see why not.'

I took of my shirt, and we waded into the lake.

I sneezed. Pacifica's laughter bubbled to the surface.

'Aww, such a cute sneeze. You sound like a little kitten.'

I splashed water at her in retaliation.

'Hey,' she warned and splashed back.

'This is war!'

'Bring it on.' I tackled her and we were both submerged. It was good to have some fun.

'We should head back,' I said after a while.

'I suppose we have to.'

We returned to camp.

'Did you eat the breakfast I made for you?' Pacifica asked.

'Is the dead bird supposed to be my breakfast?'

'Yes, it is. I promised you a dead bird in the cave, remember? We are out of food. While you were asleep, I shot that bird with my bow and arrow. If you don't want to eat it, the alternative is the berries I picked for you.'

'I'd rather have the berries, thanks. I'm impressed that you can tell which berries are safe and which aren't.'

'What's that supposed to mean?'

I'm just saying that you're full of surprises. I didn't expect princess Pacifica to have surviving skills,' I said sarcastically.

'My parents forced me to take survival classes. At the time, I was angry at them for wasting my time, but now I'm glad I stuck with it.'

'That's two things your parents have done right,' I said.

Pacifica looked at me.

'Two things?' she asked.

'The survival classes and the fact that your mother gave birth to you. You grew into a beautiful young woman.' Pacifica blushed, tomato red.

'Thanks, that's nice to hear.'

'Are you hiding any other surprises?'

'I can also speak Latin and French fluently.'

'You can speak Latin?' I was flabbergasted.

'I learned how to speak Latin first. French was easy to learn because a lot of the root words are the same as Latin.'

I had eaten all the berries in the interim and was ready to head out.
