And she woke up. The sun was shining in her window and she believed she could distinguish the blackbird's call among the bird calls. Tired, she rolled out of bed. Her body felt as if she had been running all night. As if she had sore muscles. Drowsy, she sat up, changed her clothes and was about to walk down the stairs in her black jogging pants and matching black top when her eyes fell on her left arm. Bitten. Not injured, no wounds, but with clearly visible teeth marks. Not a dream?
She turned around and opted for a dark purple hoodie, the long sleeves already down over her wrists until her hands almost disappeared into them.
A toast, a glass of orange juice. And even though her teeth were chattering, her mouth was watering, she couldn't bring herself to take an apple from the bowl. Not in front of her parents.

There wasn't much going on at school. After all these years, Katie's time at school was finally coming to an end and the final exams would soon be upon her. There was basically no new material, the teachers briefly repeated the old stuff and reminded her to study, to take the exams seriously. Katie didn't bother and exchanged little notes with Madeline in the row in front of her. It had become quite an old tradition.
Even if Katie didn't make much of it, she knew how important it was to Madeline. Ever since Andy had come into her life, the two of them had spent all their breaks together. And even though Madeline was always there, she still very much felt like a third wheel. And sometimes it took little signs of friendship like this.

A group project in history, a group of three. Her teachers weren't in the mood for proper lessons either. Katie had never really been a fan of group work, but with the right people it was always better than just sitting in class. One look from Madeline and the team set-up was clear. It was nothing special. Nothing special ever happened here.
