The morning sun peeked through the curtains as I stood over my twin sons' cribs. Just three months ago, I had finally brought these precious bundles into the world after a harrowing ordeal.
I stood watching the steady rise and fall of my babies chests as they slept, drinking in every detail of their little faces. I smiled, they looked so much like their father Liam but then my mind drifts to their own blood that tried to eliminate them.
Liam's mother had tried to end my life a year earlier, her bullets ripping through me in a haze. But I had survived, going into hiding to have my babies while hiding from their father.
It broke my heart to know Liam wasn't apart of their lives, I knew he would be an incredible father.
Today, however, marked the day I would have to face Liam again, under the pretense of a business deal. As Martha's footfalls entered the nursery, I could sense her concerned gaze.
"Are you sure about this?" she murmured.
Drawing strength from the sight of my sleeping sons, I gave a resolute nod. "Yes."
This past year had hardened me, strengthen my resolve into an impenetrable wall. I was no longer the doormat of yesteryear.
Motherhood had awakened an aggressiveness within me - a primal urge to protect my babies at all costs. If that vile woman tried anything, there would be hell to pay. I was a mother, and she'd be foolish to underestimate the lengths I would go to keep my family safe.
But I couldn't hide us away forever, condemning my babies to a life lived in fear.
I hated the thought of what I had to do - making plans to eliminate my ex-lover's mother from the equation for good. But she had left me no other choice with her deranged obsession for vengeance. If I wanted to keep my sons safe, Mrs. Steele had to be stopped at all costs.
As much as I tried to steel myself for what lay ahead, it was nearly impossible to block out the torrent of emotions surrounding Liam. I missed that man with every fiber of my being - his touch, his kisses, the all-consuming passion we had once shared.
I craved him, mind, body and soul. In my most vulnerable moments, I still yearned for us to find a way to make it work, to live out our lives together in happiness. But that future seemed forever out of reach now that he had wed Catherine, the billionaire heiress.
The images of their wedding plastered online had cut me deeply. Liam looked so dashing in his tuxedo, the picture of joy as he slipped that ring on Catherine's finger. I could only imagine the lavish life and family they would build together soon enough.
Maybe at this very moment, Catherine's belly was already swelling with Liam's child - a baby he could openly love and cherish without the threat of violence looming over them.
A terrible ache gripped my heart at the thought of my own sons being denied that paternal affection, all because of the poisonous woman determined to destroy us.
Angrily swiping away the tears that slipped free, I shoved those wistful dreams back into the lockbox where they belonged. There was no room for such fanciful longings and fresh heartbreaks now, not when I had to concentrate every ounce of my energy on the mission at hand.
Liam was forever out of my grasp. The only thing that mattered was eliminating his mother's threat against me and my children, ensuring we could live without her menacing shadow dictating our lives any longer. I had to remain hard and uncompromising to win this deadly game.
But I couldn't help the sliver of fear that once this was over, once I had crossed that line into darkness, I may never be able to find my way back into the light. For my sons' sake, I prayed I wouldn't completely lose myself in the process of surviving.
I can't believe I was going to kill my ex-lover's mother. I wonder what he would think if he knew this. He'd probably never forgive me.
I studied my reflection critically, almost unable to recognize the woman staring back at me.
I now had a new identity and even a new look. My once lush brunette hair was now pitch black, flowing down to my waist. The vibrant blue lenses in my eyes gave me a striking, almost unrecognizable appearance as to that of my natural hazel eyes.
I had put on a bit more weight and wore stylish frames, adding to my transformed persona. My dressing style had shifted to a more sophisticated, business-like wardrobe, and I had undergone a month of vocal training to alter my voice. I looked and sounded completely different. I was a new person going by the name of Rachel Adams.
My task was simple: get close to Liam and gather valuable information about his mother that I could use to bring her down. If I had attempted this mission looking the same as before, there was no doubt Liam's mother would have put a hit on me.
And Liam would no doubt try to stop me. It would be a never-ending nightmare of trying to survive his mother.
The connection with my family had made all of this possible. As it turned out, I had a family which my mother didn't let me know about. I shockingly had a father. My family had money, a detail I had never fully utilized until now.
Armed with this newfound wealth and resources, I had reinvented myself as a businesswoman with a completely fabricated past. If someone like Liam were to snoop around, they would find nothing but a seamless history of Rachel Adams.
I adjusted my frames, glancing at my reflection in the mirror one last time before kissing my babies goodbye and then stepped out.
"You know where to take me, Bryan." my chauffeur nodded.
Soon we were at the high rise building. A building operated by the Steeles. Each step I took was a calculated move in the grand scheme of my plan. I had to play my part flawlessly, ensuring that my new identity could withstand any scrutiny.
I entered the high-rise building, my heels clicking on the polished marble floor as I approached the lobby agent. My heart pounded in my chest, and I took a deep breath, steadying myself.
This was it—the moment I had been preparing for. I was about to see my ex-lover, Liam Steele, for the first time in a year.
"Good morning," I said, my voice steady despite the nerves bubbling beneath the surface. "I have a meeting with Liam Steele."
The lobby agent looked up from her computer, her expression professional and neutral. "May I have your name, please?"
"Rachel Adams," I replied, trying to sound as confident as possible. My transformation was complete, but I still felt a flicker of anxiety. Would he recognize me? Would he see through the new identity I had worked so hard to create?
The agent typed something into her computer, her fingers moving swiftly over the keyboard. A moment later, she looked up and smiled. "This way, ma'am," she said, gesturing towards the elevators.
I nodded, following her lead. My mind raced with memories of Liam, the intense connection we had shared, and the painful reason we had parted ways. Now, under the guise of Rachel Adams, I had to keep my emotions in check and focus on the mission.
The elevator doors pinged open, and I stepped out into a sleek, modern hallway. The lobby agent gestured towards a door at the end.
"Right through there, ma'am," she said with a professional smile.
"Thank you," I replied, my voice steady despite the storm of emotions inside me. I walked slowly towards the door, taking a moment to compose myself before pushing it open.
As the door swung open, I scanned the room. There, among a few other people, stood Liam Steele. Our eyes locked together instantly. My breath caught in my throat; he was as handsome as ever, his presence commanding the room just as it always had.
Swooning ocean blue eyes, thick dark hair neatly styled, thick long lashes, well-sculpted face, kissable lips and a well-built form just as I had remembered him.
His gaze remained on me, a flicker of recognition—or was it curiosity?—in his eyes. "You must be Rachel Adams," he replied, his voice smooth and familiar.
"Please, have a seat." he gestures.
