Amarnath has no idea why he was asleep until nine in the morning; he never wakes up late. And he refuses to accept it was because he stayed up late last night, drinking and thinking about someone he is trying hard to forget.
He wraps a towel around his waist and gets out of the bathroom, rubbing his wet hair. As he passes through the living room, he sees Gauri clad in a pleated floral skirt and a pink puff-sleeved ruffle top, sitting on the sofa with a resolute expression.
He staggers, holding onto the wall for support. Gauri stands up, screwing her eyes shut as she turns away (though she absolutely doesn't want to).
Amarnath scrambles into his bedroom and slams the door shut. Gauri sits down, cupping her face. He reappears in a cream-coloured T-shirt and black trousers.
'Who let you in?' he glares at the door, avoiding her eye. 'Did you threaten them with a Criminal Complaint again?'
Gauri looks stung. 'They tried to hold my hand the other day. That's why I said so.'
Amarnath's face darkens. 'Who? Who tried to h-' he walks up to the main door. 'EVERYONE COME HERE!!!'
'Amar, calm down,' Gauri looks taken aback.
The constables come running to the door. 'Saab.'
'Did you try to hold her hand that day?' Amarnath demands, pointing to Gauri.
The constables stand in silence.
'DID YOU OR NOT??!' Amarnath takes a furious step towards them. They stagger back in fear.
'Amar, stop it,' Gauri snaps.
He turns to her. 'Who was it?'
Gauri crosses her arms and tilts her head. 'I'm not telling you.'
The constables glance at each other, surprised. This girl was actually saying the truth that day; she must be someone very special, talking to DCP Saab like this.
Gauri throws up her arms. 'They were scared of what you might say if they let me in. They were just doing their duty.'
Amarnath glares at the constables for a long terrifying moment. 'Once again I hear such things about you, I'll chop your hands and throw them into the drain. Learn how to behave with women first. Out!' he snaps.
The constables scurry away.
Amarnath and Gauri stand in silence. Him at the door, looking out and Gauri gazing at the back of his head.
'I'm sorry about that article. I know you're hurt,' she says quietly.
Amarnath doesn't reply.
'It was my senior's order that it should be harsh. You know how seniors are. You'll have to obey them. I'm really, really sorry, Amar.'
That is true, Amarnath has to admit. But ...
'What else do you want me to say, Amar? Please ... just say something'
He turns to her haltingly. 'If it is so difficult ... then I think we ... w-we should not talk to each other at all.'
'No!' Gauri snaps in such a way that it sparks a sudden burst of sunshine in Amarnath's heart.
