Valery Pov.

Valery's POV

I wanted to escape this school.

I hadn't been here long, but I already felt like I was going to die. I hadn't even tried to convince my brothers to leave, but I knew they wouldn't agree. They'd been wanting to attend this school for years.

And I remembered what Dad had told me before we left that house:

"Don't you dare to disappoint me again, Valery... This is the last time. If you do it again, you know what will happen next. Remember that."

He said it before opening the car door for me.

I just nodded.

I knew Dad never loved me, even before. My brothers... I don't know, they gave me mixed signals. Sometimes they worried about me when something bad happened, but other times they didn't care. It was confusing.

They treated me like a disappointment, like a burden. If my sister hadn't died, they wouldn't have needed to adopt me, right? What the hell? It felt like they were telling me I had no right to live without them.

They made me feel so weak, so worthless. They treated me like crap! Sometimes, during family events, at home or at the company, we would act like a perfect, happy family. But only Mom, Zorrel, truly appreciated me. She was my savior, especially when Dad punished me. While he whipped me, Mom would plead with him to stop, her eyes filled with despair. She would beg the bodyguards to release her from Dad's grasp so she could help me.

My brothers, Vincent and Nico, would just stand behind Dad, watching me suffer through the pain he inflicted.

The whip would land on my back, and then Dad would yell at me:

Flashback:

"Another disappointment, Valery!" He said, striking me again with the whip. "I told you this was the last time you'd disappoint this family, but here we go again!" He roared.

My body was weak, but I forced myself to stand.

"Every time you disappoint us, it makes us realize what a piece of trash you are, Valery. We should have never adopted you if all you were going to do was cause trouble!" Dad yelled, shoving me hard. I slammed against the wall, my head hitting with a sickening thud.

The impact was so strong that I lost consciousness.

"VALERY!"

That was the last thing I heard before blacking out.

"Valery," a young boy's voice called out.

I looked around, trying to find the source of the voice.

"Valery, here," he said again.

"Come here, child," a woman's voice said.

"Valery, come here, child," a man's voice said.

Who was calling me? Why couldn't I find them?

I looked behind me and saw a family having a picnic under a large tree. They were sheltered from the sun.

Something about the little girl's face seemed familiar, but I couldn't place it. She looked like someone I knew, but I couldn't remember who. It was so strange.

"Valery, child, wake up. Mommy's waiting for you," I heard Mom's voice, but I didn't know where it was coming from.

"Mommy? Mommy, where are you? Mom?" I called out, searching for her.

"Valery, wake up. I need you, baby," I heard Mom crying, but I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from.

I started to cry. I didn't know where I was. The happy family picnicking under the tree was gone.

"Valery, child, wake up. Mommy made your favorite food. Come on, wake up," I heard Mom crying again.

Mom, where are you? Where am I? Mom, help me!

"What's happening?" I heard Mom's voice.

"The patient is fighting for her life, ma'am. You need to go outside," a man's voice said. I could hear Mom protesting.

Mom, what's going on!!

And then, everything went black...

I woke up to the noise surrounding me. I opened my eyes, but the light was so bright that I had to close them again.

"Oh my God, am I dead? Am I in heaven, Lord? Wait, Lord, I'm really in heaven? No way..."

"Valery!" Mom shouted, rushing towards my bed. "Oh, thank God, you're awake, my daughter! How are you? Does anything hurt?" she asked, her voice laced with worry.

"I'm okay, Mom, thank you," I said.

"I thought I was going to lose you, just like we lost your sister," Mom cried.

"No, Mom, like I've always told you, I'm not going to leave you, never, Mom," I said to reassure her.
