Work Text:
When Ghost had first heard talk of a new, big, and tall soldier being transferred to the COP they were living in, he had to admit that he was a bit curious. Word was that the soldier was taller than Ghost and even bigger in muscle, which piqued his interest. Surely the man couldn't be that big.The soldiers whispered nonstop, talking like Ghost wasn't in the room. Some would say the new soldier was at least 2 metres tall. Others were excitedly wishing they could try the man in a spar.
But when he still hadn't caught sight of the supposed giant a week after the talk started, he summed it up to a rumour and only a rumour. He was soon moved back to the main base and sent out on a mission with his captain, Rudy, and Soap, which meant he didn't interact with anyone else other than Laswell and, on occasion, her team, so he almost completely forgot about the soldier.
That was until Soap-of all fucking people- brought it up once they were back at base.
They were eating in the mess hall, him and Soap, and the sergeant was going on about everything and nothing. Ghost was listening, he really was, it was just so easy to drown the words out and simply focus on the sound of the man's voice.
He found himself doing that a lot lately, even going as far as looking at the videos Soap sent him occasionally when one of them was off duty- just documenting stupid shit he and his friends or their teammates were doing. It was starting to look like he was in love with the Scottish man. Which he wasn't. Absolutely not.
Ghost played with his food, not paying attention to anything in particular as Soap kept talking more than enough for the two of them.
"-doubting it myself, but then a saw 'im an' he looked to be even taller than ye, Ghost! It was mad!"
This, however, brought his attention back to the man sitting in front of him. He snapped his head up and just stared at Soap for a moment.
"... Who?" he asked with a slight irritation in his voice.
Soap stopped eating and gestured behind Ghost.
"Tha' new fella from KorTac. König something," he said as he grabbed his fork again and took a bite. Ghost turned slightly. At first he didn't see who Soap meant, as no one looked out of the ordinary. Just a few soldiers eating lunch and laughing with each other. Some were still in field uniform, no doubt from training they had in the mornings. Ghost even recognized some of them, as he himself taught a self defence class every now and then.
But then a man a few tables behind them stood up with his tray, possibly to leave the mess hall. And to say he was tall was an understatement.
The man looked to be at least three heads taller than the rest of the men and women in the hall despite the fact that he was slouching terribly with his head down. His uniform did little to leave anything to the imagination- except for the damn sniper hood that covered his face completely.
This man was huge. In all possible ways, it seemed. Ghost caught himself staring and turned his eyes back to his food.
"Don't look like anythin' special to me," he muttered, rubbing his thumb against his finger.
Soap laughed out loud, making a few people turn their heads.
"Whatever ye say, Ghost," he beamed, like he knew something Ghost didn't. Ghost scoffed but stole a glance at Soap, silently admiring the smile on his face.
"Bet I could take him in a fight," he said as he pushed up the mask over his nose to take a bite from his food. The food tasted bland as always, but this time there was a tinge of bitterness to it that Ghost couldn't place. Soap was uncharacteristically quiet for a few seconds, so Ghost looked up.
