Each passing day saw Sunoo falling deeper and deeper in love with her, his sun. A year had slipped away, and they were inseparable, spending every waking moment together. She made him feel alive, human — a liberating experience.
Yet, the pain of knowing that he couldn't spend eternity with her still loomed above him.
Gazing down at her sleeping form, he could not resist gently stroking her cheek. It was as if his undead heart was pounding for her; a sensation that would not have surprised him. Anything could happen for someone like her.
In her slumber, she appeared so peaceful, devoid of worry or stress—though she rarely exhibited those traits, anyway. Somehow, she always managed to radiate brightness and a smile, even during their first encounters when she was on the brink of death. His sweet little human.
Yet, everything changed in a split second. Her eyes snapped wide open, staring back at him, crimson red, brighter and darker than his own. Sunoo flinched backward and blinked, only to witness her return to a peaceful sleep. Was he seeing things? Hallucinating?
Sunoo cleared his throat, reclining once more and gazing up at the vast sky. The stars appeared different tonight, fainter, if such a thing were possible.
A sudden snap of a branch jolted him to his feet. His eyes scanned the meadow, attempting to discern the source of the sound, yet nothing revealed itself.
'Chase.'
When he looked back down at her, she was gone. Panic began to ripple through his chest.
'Little human?!'
Laughter echoed— a deep and guttural sound.
He turned his head, searching for her behind him, but all he faced was a black shadow. Crimson eyes locked onto his, a scythe pointed at his chest. Cloaked in armour the colour of midnight, the shadow stood before him, sending shivers down his spine.
'Chase,' the shadow uttered, the words resonating loudly without the movement of lips.
Sunoo needed no further command. His feet propelled him into the forest, the sudden sound of hooves thundering behind him. Vampires were renowned for their incredible speed, yet the steed seemed unhindered, effortlessly maintaining pace. The scythe swung toward his feet with a swift motion.
A searing pain shot through his leg as the scythe grazed his skin, sending him tumbling to the ground. Soil flew as he rolled, his journey halted by a tree that absorbed the impact.
The surrounding air darkened, swirling in wisps of shadows as if he found himself in the eye of a storm.
Sunoo groaned but managed to look up. In his peripheral vision, he discerned the red eyes circling him.
Behind those crimson eyes lay another set, pale and passive, silently observing.
The knight lunged forward, his steed vanished, scythe in hand, poised to dismantle Sunoo.
In a swift manoeuvre, Sunoo dodged the attack and countered with a punch of his own, sending the knight sprawling. Emboldened by his newfound strength, Sunoo continued his assault, relentless in forcing the shadowy knight to retreat into the swirling storm of dark mist before reappearing behind him.
This time, Sunoo was less prepared, and just as the scythe threatened to cut into his flesh, the pale shadow raised a hand, signalling a halt.
Wide-eyed, Sunoo turned to face the knight, whose hand hung high in the air, poised for a strike. The unexpected pause created an eerie tension in the air as they confronted each other in the midst of the shadowy turmoil.
'Sir Vampire?' The voice resonated from the knight, yet his lips remained unmoved. 'Can you hear me?' The voice, soft and melodic, echoed like the sweetest melody, reminiscent of his little human's song.
As if carried away by the wind, the shadows dispersed with the wind, revealing a familiar face. Her hands cradled his face, cheeks stained with dried tears, eyes brimming with concern.
His little human.
'Are you okay?' she inquired.
He seized hold of her hands, gripping them tightly before pressing his lips onto hers. Pulling her as close as he could, a fear lingered that she might vanish once more.
When they finally broke the kiss, he spoke, 'I think I saw them.'
'Saw who?'
'Death.'
