Brown eyes were reluctant to shut, scanning through the dim room as moonlight peaked hesitantly through the curtains. Eventually those eyes came to a stop, resting on something so surreal and perfect. Almost too perfect to be real. The boy next to him.
A pale face was squished against the pillow, white and fluffy hair a total mess against his head. The covers were drawn up to the male’s chin, laying on his side and snoring softly. Those pink, parted lips. Sometimes it was just impossible to look away from him, especially when he was asleep. It was always so peaceful, compared to the usual tension this boy always carried.
Gon continued laying on his side, resting his face against his arm as he watched Killua sleep. Killua’s chest rose and fell slowly, the peace of sleep etched into his pale face. Gon smiled softly, something aching strongly in his heart as he continued watching Killua sleep.
Today had to go absolutely perfect.
As Gon slowly sat up, stretching out his legs from under the covers, he felt more energized than he should have. The lack of sleep had yet to get to him; Gon hadn’t gotten a blink of sleep, as his thoughts kept running endlessly through his head, planning out every last detail of his intentions. But he felt ready. He was ready. As for Killua, well, the male had no idea what he was in for. And Gon intended to keep it like that, wanting to surprise Killua. He just hoped that Killua didn’t…
No. Gon shook his head, getting such thoughts out of his head before they could even affect him. He wouldn’t let himself think like that. Not today. And if.. If that were to happen, it would be okay. Things would be okay. But Gon wouldn’t let himself consider the possibility of it.
Gon would make sure this day was perfect; Every hour, every minute, every second. This day needed to be perfect. Just like Killua, so, so perfect in every little thing he did.
With a soft yawn, Gon very slowly and carefully got out of the bed, kicking his feet out from under the covers and letting them reach for the floor. He kept his eyes trained on the boy buried in the sheets as he moved, watching out for any stirring. He didn’t want to wake the boy. Killua was always a hard one to predict; Some nights, he slept like a rock, while others he was as easy to stir as a bird. So, that left Gon sneaking away on his tip-toes toward the bedroom door.
Though the house was quiet and asleep, birds from outside could be heard stirring awake with soft chirps. It was still an hour till sunrise, the moon illuminating light into parts of the house. If Gon intended on leaving the house and returning without being noticed, he would have to be quick. His aunt, Mito, was usually an early bird. She would wake in just a few hours, so Gon was on a serious time crunch.
Gon walked down the stairs slowly, one cautious step at a time, avoiding every stair that usually made creaks with only the slightest of pressures. Every step was silent but quick as he dashed over to the hall closet.
He sighed in relief. Everything that he had hid the previous day was still there. Good.
Gon quickly gathered the things from the closet and into his arms, careful not to stumble or drop anything as he shoved everything into a bag. Today was going to be a long day. Not only would Gon need to prepare, but he would have some distracting to do as well. He couldn’t let anyone get suspicious; nothing would stand in his way. After all, Killua was the best friend anyone could ask for. He deserved every last ounce of effort and more that Gon was putting into this surprise.
It was anything but a special occasion. At least, not on any actual calendars. But to Gon, this was the biggest day of his life. And he hoped that maybe it could be Killua’s biggest day, too, if the inevitable didn’t happen.
