It was the beginning of summer, kids played in the streets as Rose sat on the porch. She smiled at the sight, leaning her head against her arm. Lost in her thoughts of her own childhood memories. The front door slamming, bringing her back to reality. Slowly turning her head to the door, her mother stood there, " Are you ready? They are waiting for me at the airport!" " Y-y-yes, mom", Rose quickly grabbed her suitcase and headed towards the car. As her mother drove quickly out of the neighborhood and onto the highway, Rose looked back as she mentally said goodbye to her home.
**
An hour after driving, Rose woke from her nap to discover the city was gone and only trees surronded them. She glanced quickly at her mother, "How long was I passed out for, mo-" " You ask too many questions!",said her mother, taking a drag from her cigarette. Rose looked out the window, she just couldn't understand why her mother was like that towards her. Gazing at the trees, she shook the idea off her mind, until feeling the sharp turn of the car. Slamming the side of her face against the window, " Mom! Is everything o-" " We are here," her mom leaned over, opening the door, " Make sure to use your manners and behave yourself. " Rose sat there in shock at her mother's change of voice. Softly mumbling, " Yes, Ma'am." " Hey!" her mother harshly grabbed a hold of her chin, speaking in a low cold voice " No mumbling.. That is your worst habit.. I AM TALKING TO YOU!" she shook Rose's head until she met her eyes, " Now you are going to smile, you will do as you are told.. if I hear anything bad you've done... I swear.. it will be the last day you see sunlight.. do I make myself clear?" Rose lightly shook her head. Her mother grined, " Good.. Now get out of the car.. " Rose slowly followed instructions, grabbing her suitcase and closing the door. She walked a few feet away from the car, glancing back to see her mother speed off.
Sighing deeply, she lifted her head to see a tall two story house down the long drive way. She examined the yard as she walked, it was filled with old broke down cars, tall trees and nic-nacks thrown here and there. After a few minutes, Rose finally reached the long, dusty, off-white porch. Before knocking on the door, she reached into her pocket and took out a crumbled note that read,
The person you will ask for is my old friend, Mary.
Looking at the note once more she then stuck it back into her pocket. Slowly knocking on the door, she patiently waited for an answer. As she was about to knock again the door clicked open. Rose straightened her posture, faking a big smile, and watched as the door slowly crept open, a light cool breeze escaping it. A woman came out from behind the door, " Yes?" She was in a dark grey sweater that passed her knees, revealing black tights and bare feet. Rose gulped, " Hello ma'am, are you Mary? My name is Rose and my moth-" Mary chuckled and gestured her to come in before Rose could finished her sentence. Rose kept a confused expression as Mary disappeared into the dim house.
Rose cautiously walked into the house, closing the door.Inside the house was beautiful and neat. Pictures and mirrors hung on all the walls. As she continued to examin the living room, the light aroma of sweet apple and cinnamon. Rose looked quickly around, trying to find the source of the scent. Quickly turning to her right, a lit candle caught her eye. Rose smiled as she took a big whiff of it. Thinking to herself, Maybe this will be a good summer after all.
