"That was foolish of you," the apkallu rose taller, feeding on its own ego, sauntering around Emily. Fury was building in its gruesome features.

"Why?" Emily grinned, still holding one sword. "You act like I don't know the ancient legends."

"No one knows the ancient legends," it hissed. "We made sure the truth seekers and sacred knowledge holders were corrupted with our version of the events. None of the truth was supposed to survive." It towered over her.

Emily laughed brilliantly. "I'm an archaeologist. We dig for the truth. We translate the forgotten texts. We know the ancient secrets. Do I need to tell you some of them as a reminder? Cut you down to size while speaking truth to lies? C'mon, apkallu - that's the kind of challenge an archaeologist like me lives for."

"You're wounded!" It seethed. "You can't be this brave."

"I'm human," Emily replied. "Humans have a survival streak that's built into their hearts. Besides, I've seen the Treasure Guardian. And he taught me not to be afraid of the darkness... or fallen gods like you."
