Chapter VI
L A L I S A
"Do I really have to be here?" I have spent approximately half an hour sitting at a dinner table with my family and this is the longest time I've been with them at one table.
I am not supposed to be here in the first place.
"Of course you do, she's your fiance Hija." my mother said and reached my hands over the table to rub it gently. I take a deep breath, I don't want to say words and be hurtful to my mother.
"She's originally my brother's, not mine." If it wasn't for my brother, I wouldn't be in this situation. How many useless dinners do I have to attend? How many women do I have to scare off and reject for these two old geezers to stay out of our personal lives.
The original plan was for my brother to be married with another family to strengthen the ties, you know business and shts, they already had a list of families. This is the seventh time already and I'm so tired of scaring people. I wanna go out and drink myself out, I wanted to be with women, not with two old geezer.
Since my brother ran away when this old man introduced him to his supposed fiance. It caused a huge argument and violence, it left my mother traumatized. We haven't seen my brother since then. But I'm sure they already know where he is, this old man here just doesn't give a fck taking him back. And so they throw the responsibility on me since I'm the only one left.
And while contemplating the scenarios I will be doing to get out of here, the door suddenly opens up and when I turned my head, I saw Jennie Kim, all the thought momentarily left my mind. I cussed in my head, her dress is too revealing and with a slight movement she'll be showing her under and that fckng low neckline-cut on her garment that almost leads down to her belly button.
Damn you Lisa, you already saw her body because you're being an asshle, stupid!
I shook my head to shake away the thoughts in my head. Right, how can I be so stupid as to ask an innocent woman to get naked in front of me and.. kissed her.
I glance at Jennie again and her moves are different, she's so elegant that I can't take my eyes off her. Although her dress is too revealing, it set off her pale skin and she gave it justice, even the attendants can't hide their desire to look at her, Jennie's long black hair now is tied up and tickled in all the right places. She was surprisingly cut to hide nothing but everything.
She noticed my stare and turned to look at me with her feline dark brown eyes that seemed to bore into me, her lips that I once touched. My heart pounded as she looked at me, appraising every detail of me, before looking me in the eyes again and smiling so slightly.
"Damn.." I whispered, I never felt as nervous as this.
"Good evening Mr. and Mrs. Manoban. My name is Jennie Kim." She slightly bowed her head in front of us, and when she lifted her head, she glanced at me again with the same expression on her face as when the first time we met. No emotion showing, then I remembered that smile on her face when she's pointing a gun at her head. She's different from the other women I have met, after that kiss it feels so different now. I am afraid to hurt her and do the things she did not deserve.
My mother stood up and gave Jennie a warm hug. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Jennie." She was surprised but stay composed. When my mother let her go, Jennie gave my father a kiss on his cheek.
"Thank you for inviting me." Jennie said, my mother glared at me indicating that I needed to stand up and assist her.
"Damn it." I muttered. I stood up and pulled the chair for her until she settled on her seat beside me. I removed my coat and placed it on her. This is so uncomfortable.
"How was your stay, Jennie?" My father asked.
"It was wonderful," She answered and took a quick glance at me.
"I see, and how about you young lady," My father looked at me. "You need to decide whether or not to continue this set up, I want your answer before this dinner ends. Because if you don't, we don't have a choice but to bring Jennie back to her father." The silence in the room falls awkward and hard and before I can even answer, Jennie speaks.
"How much did you pay my father?" her hands were on her lap, and she's squeezing it hard that it already turned white. I also noticed that she's still wearing the ring that I gave her. It somehow makes me happy even after what I have done to her.
"A partnership with our company honey, your mother is a good friend of mine and I witness how Dianne and your father worked hard to build it, but after your mother died, your father gradually lost interest." my father answered. I looked at Jennie again and sadness was all over her face and a shot sting my chest.
"A good friend and yet you want her daughter to be married to a stranger? To be in this fcking set up?! How friends works in your generation?" I said sarcastically. This is nonsense. If they have a good intention with that partnership, why do they need to force this woman to be married to someone like me. They know how fcked I am.
"You are no stranger Lisa and I'm giving Jennie a new life, away from her father."
"So you think this is the only way to do that?"
"Yes, and I want you to consider."
"Fckng nonsense! And you drag me to this?!" I slammed my hands on the table causing Jennie to jolt. My father did not answer and stay firm. "Why don't you just adopt her if you really want to help her?" I thought this was all about business, no personal connection and sht."Her father won't let us do that, for how many years we've tried. Jennie suffered more than you could ever imagine Lisa, and offering marriage is the only thing her father agreed to." I looked at his eyes directly and he did the same. I felt more guilty hearing that from him. "That is why, I want you to consider this marriage."
They throw this responsibility to me, this is really hard for me knowing Jennie will suffer again if I refuse. This is really frustrating. I looked at Jennie and I can't read what she's thinking.
"One year," This old man just laughed at my statement.
"Three years, Lalisa." The old man answered. "Three years and you are free."
"A year is long enough to be with someone I don't even like. What more if it's three years?! I can only sacrifice a year of my life." I bit my lower lip in frustration.
"Lali, honey." my mom looked at me trying to calm me down.
"Come mom," I looked at my father, "My decision is final. It's a year or leave me out of it!" He let out a heavy breath and shook his head in disbelief.
"I'll see what I can do. I'll call you with the final decision." Then she looked at Jennie and apologized for my attitude.
This is so stupid.
