FLASHBACK

Amelia was driving home from work, she was an assistant at an office in east London, she just turned eighteen and it was her first job. The office was full of men double and triple her age, while most of their time was spent ogling her the rest of the time they treated her like shit. She hated it.

Jack was twenty-one and although he spent most of his time on uppers at upper-class parties he cared very deeply about his little sister and kept her away from that life, or did his best to. Just as Amelia was turning the corner onto their street his contact popped up on her phone, she knew he wouldn't call unless it was serious, he's a texter. As fast as she could she pulled her car into their drive and called him back.

"Amelia?" He breathed heavily down the phone, answering as soon as she put the phone to her ear. "There's been an accident, you need to come to the hospital."

"What do you mean?" She asked, noticing her mum's car wasn't parked in front of hers like it usually was. She held her breath as she asked her next question. "Is anyone hurt?"

"I-" He paused, choosing his words for his sister carefully, "Please just get here as soon as you can Lia?"

Before she could interrogate him any further, he hung up the phone. Without a second thought, she restarted her car and reversed out of the drive. The whole journey, she was biting her fingernails anxiously and she couldn't concentrate with the radio on so it was silent. Just her and her thoughts. Her parents had to be okay, she would not be able to live without them. Jack was great to her, sure but he didn't understand her needs the way they did.

Amelia is autistic. She was diagnosed just the year before. Her whole life she had felt out of place, everywhere she went, with everyone she met, she felt like an outsider. In high school she really struggled to communicate her feelings to anyone, she was pretending to be someone else every day. Her friends only knew the little she wanted them to. When she broke down and finally tried to put her feelings into words with someone, it was Lucy. Lucy and her had met in an after-school music club, and they instantly connected. Soon she became the friend Amelia felt closest to, she always payed a lot of attention to people and cared very deeply about Amelia and she felt it.

Lucy took in every word the younger girl said and consoled her the whole way through her sobbing, she helped her work up the courage to talk to her parents about it and held her hand on the couch when she did. Amelia's parents did everything they could to support her and get her the help she needed. Her dad checked in on her every day and her mum became her rock, she told her everything.

There was a road closure so she had to take a longer route to the hospital, her neck began to itch and her stomach tightened as her thoughts continued. She couldn't lose her parents, they were everything to her. When she pulled up to a red light, she texted Lucy to tell her something was going on.
