Gru always seemed to find himself in strange predicaments. He grew up without a father figure, because his father left after finding out his wife was with child. His mother moved to a small town, and raised him by herself. The local school system was terrible, so Gru's mother pulled him out of public school. Gru found friends anywhere he could. Currently, his friend group consists of 3 people. His best friend, Shrek, who met him at the local town park, and their two mutual friends, Garfield and Elvis Presley, who Shrek introduced him to.

The town they lived in, Flavortown, hosted a talent show every couple of years. This year, Gru, Shrek, and Elvis decided to compete together as a group. After much discussion, they all came to the agreement that they wanted to sing "Let it Grow" from "The Lorax".

They also agreed to hang out and practice their act. Gru's apartment was the best place to practice, since he was home alone for the night. Shrek and Elvis showed up around 5:30 PM, and they spent the first hour practicing. Growing increasingly bored, Elvis suggested they watch The Lorax for reference. The group moved from the spare bedroom in which they were practicing, to the living room.

At around 30 minutes into the movie, Shrek began gossiping about some of the people who came into the McDonald's at which he worked. As the hours grew later and later, Gru began to feel more exhausted. He wasn't sure how much longer he could stay awake.

Gru was awoken by the sound of his mother's croaky voice. "Wake up and get in the car, I already packed your things. I'll explain the situation later."

Gru got up with what energy he had, heading for the parking lot as fast as he could. His mother followed soon after, along with two bags filled with personal belongings. Gru's mother, Jello Man, began driving out of town. They stopped at a run-down hotel, about an hour away from their apartment.

The inside of the building reeked of mold and cigarette smoke. The interior had red carpets with stains, along with water damaged floors and ceilings. Gru's mother walked up to the front desk and made reservations, while Gru stayed by the entrance, struggling with their luggage. 'Weren't there people who did this for guests,' Gru questioned to himself. Thankfully, His mother came over to get her bags, which lightened the load significantly. It was like his mother had packed all of their belongings.

Once inside of the room, his mother excused herself to the room's balcony, which didn't look entirely stable. She spent almost and hour outside, taking multiple phone calls. Gru began to feel incredibly weird about this whole situation, once more. He was beginning to question why she hadn't explained anything to him for over an hour. The car ride was complete silence. Gru had to turn on the radio to break the tension.

Eventually, his mother came back inside. "Honey, we need to talk," she said in a nervous manner.
