IN THE QUIET HUM of their English Literature class, Y/N and Madison sit together, surrounded by scattered notes and the soft, jazzy tunes of Frank Sinatra playing from a shared laptop. Though, the air still reeks a hint of awkwardness.
"Uhm—you know in a way, you could say that Sinatra uses his voice kinda like a paint brush." Y/N suggested, "The way he was able to convey things felt like he was painting. . . i-if you get what I mean."
Madison's eyebrows piqued, "That's actually not a bad analogy." She admitted with a hint of her thick Long Island accent, "He even tends to stretch or linger on a word. It's like he's savoring it."
"Yeah, true. . . true."
And yet again, they fall again to an awkward silence. They share an occasional glance at each other but keep their eyes peered to the same laptop as they listen to the music.
Madison then clears her throat, "In a way, his voice was more than just sound as well. It kinda played off like it's its own instrument."
Out of nowhere, Y/N suddenly chuckles a brief laugh that sounded as if it were held back for a period of time.
Madison's eyebrows furrow, "I-Is there something wrong?"
"No, No, I'm sorry it's just. . ." Y/N clears his throat as he turned to face the woman, ". . . your accent. Not that it's bad but like your accent just sounds so familiar. It reminds me of that one girl in the Wolf of Wall Street. What was her name—it was like. . . N-Nora? or Noma—"
"Oh! Naomi!" Madison realized, as her eyes brightened, "Yeah, I get that a lot actually. I love that movie. I think people changed their perspective on Long Island after seeing it. Usually when people think of New York, people just think about Manhattan."
"Oh yeah, but after seeing Margot Robbie in that one dinner scene with Leo. . . that was game for me."
"Oh, that scene! Yeah I love that scene. She's just so iconic in it. When I watched it for the first time, I would rehearse her lines over and over again." Madison said with enthusiasm, "You wanna hear it?"
Y/N smiles, "Hit me."
"Alright, let me give you her whole spiel. So she's like. . ." Madison then turns much more to her side, now face to face with the star basketball player as her tone becomes more sultry, ". . . Well aren't you married? And then Leo says like, 'Yeah but married people can have friends.' And then Margot goes like, 'Oh, we're gonna be friends?' then after that. . ."
Madison's eyes suddenly became more doe, more narrowed at Y/N as her hands subconsciously snakes slowly at the table, "Oh honey. . . we're not gonna be friends."
