Chapter 01

Jungkook's chest was trembling. A deep vibration spread across his torso. Inside, there was unrest. As soon as he woke up in the morning, something strange and unexpected happened. He stared at the letter in his hand, his thick eyebrows slightly furrowed in a contemplative gaze. A letter? In this day and age? A beautifully wrapped yellow envelope! But neither the sender's nor the recipient's address was written on it. More alarming, the letter had been placed on his chest. He had spotted it right away as soon as he opened his eyes. Do postmen these days leave letters silently on people's chests while they sleep? Had they started doing their jobs this way?

Suddenly, Jungkook remembered there wasn't even a postman in Busan as the city had now embraced modern life. For twenty bucks, you could send a letter from the courier office in the market. No more postmen cycling from house to house to deliver letters. So how did this letter end up on his chest? Who could have sent this in the time of the internet?

Unable to hold back his curiosity, Jungkook tore open the envelope and pulled out the letter. As he unfolded it, his heart skipped a beat for a moment. The small, clear letters glared back at him:

Your peaceful sleep is over, Jungkookie. You've been resting too comfortably while my heart have been burning inside. You and your rotten teeth won't be able to laugh anymore, because if you do, I won't spare you. I'll make you cry, and cry a lot. I know reading this will turn your face pale and scare you, but it won't help. I'm now a full player, and I'll win this game by scoring my own goal. It's your misfortune that someone like me wasted ink and five whole minutes writing these words. Jungkook, from now on, you will only see darkness, and when you come into the darkness with a light, you'll find me there.

Jungkook sat there, frozen. That was all that was written on a long page, yet it was so terrifying and menacing! Who would send such a threatening letter? He quickly got off the bed. His tiny heart felt as if it had shrunk with fear. What a bizarre thing to happen so early in the morning. Throwing a quick glance around his small room, he stuffed the letter between his books and hurried to the kitchen. On the way, he bumped into his cousin Suzy, who was heading to the rooftop with some hog plums in hand, probably plucked by Uncle from the tree behind the house. Last night, he had mentioned that the hog plums had ripened and should be picked soon. Lisa was busy rolling dough for bread. Jungkook called out loudly from the doorway, keeping his eyes on his mother,

"Mom, did anyone come into my room?"

Lisa gave him an annoyed look. She hated being disturbed while working. Irritated, she replied,

"Hana came earlier to ask you for help with math. She sat there for a while and then left when she saw you were still sleeping."

"So early? It's only seven o'clock."

"Does everyone sleep like you? You even fall asleep in the bathroom! She has an exam today and wanted help with a math problem."

Jungkook pouted immediately. His mother never missed an opportunity to tease him about falling asleep in the bathroom. Yes, he did sleep a bit more than usual, but that one time he had dozed off while showering, back when he was in fifth grade, had turned into an endless joke. Because he hadn't locked the bathroom door, Lisa had barged in when he didn't come out after a long time. Seeing him dozing off, she had thrown a jug of water at his face. Moms are supposed to be gentle, yet Lisa never spared any sharp remarks. And Suzy? She had spread that bathroom story to everyone in the house. Ever since, people had started calling him  “The sleeping beauty of bathroom.”  And it wasn't just limited to their house-most of the people knew by now, thanks to Suzy.

Lisa narrowed her eyes at him and shouted, "Why are you standing there without washing your face? What mischief have you done this morning? Speak up, or I'll get to the bottom of it. Remember, I gave birth to you, so I know every nerve of yours!"
