I slowly open my eyes and feel the bright orange light come across the surface of my cheek. I turn on my side facing the side table to see an old photo of me. It’s been five years since I moved to the states with my aunt and I can’t help but reminisce the past as I stare deep into the photo.
I try to prop myself up but a hand suddenly pulls me back. “Yoon Jae-ah, you can’t leave me alone here, the monster might get to me.” a small voice mouths these words underneath the thick white sheets on my bed. “Yo Seob-ah, wake up, there’s no monster. It’s morning already.” He squeezes my hand tighter, threatening not to let go until I shake him to his senses.
It was our usual weekend sleepover again and this time, it was at my place. Yo Seob and I have been best buddies ever since I moved here. He was the first one to talk to me in class and eventually became someone like a brother to me.
I take a step back and sit on the mattress and slowly uncover the face behind the thick white blankets to see a dreadfully scared face. “Don’t tell me you got scared just because of the movie?” I asked in a shocked yet joking manner. “That’s because you fell asleep and made me watch the whole thing by myself.” he whines in a really cute and childish way. “That’s your fault for not waking me up.” I reply triumphantly “That’s because you looked really tired and I didn’t want you up.” he quickly answers in a concerned tone.
He was right; I have been way stressed out with all the homework and projects lately. I turn to the side and face the mirror. I could see bags under my eyes and small yet noticeable line on the sides. Even after a long rest, my body still couldn’t recover from all the stress.
I start to lean backwards and eventually fall right back on the bed. I put my hands on my face trying to think of the possible ways to get rid of all the horrid things that are currently haunting my face until I hear a quiet rumble…it was my stomach and not long after I could hear another rumble coming from Yo Seob’s stomach. I’m guessing both of our stomachs were really looking for something to digest. “Yah, let’s go get something to eat. How’s pancakes sound to you?” no one has ever made a pancake that could defeat my own. “I thought you’d never ask.” he then bashfully answers.
Both of us then head out to the kitchen and I start cooking while he sets the table. While were munching on the pancakes, I felt something moving inside my pocket, it was my phone and when I hold it up to see the caller ID it read “Jung Yoon” it was my boyfriend, my loving and sensitive boyfriend. I quickly hit the accept button and put the phone right up to my ear
“Yoboseyo? Who’s this?” pretending not to know who it was seemed like a funny idea and Yo Seob was trying to hold back a laugh beside me. “Hmm, may I please speak to my yeobo? I think you answered the wrong phone.” He playfully answers with a slight laugh at the end.
“May I know the name of your yeobo then?”
“Her name is Choi Yoon Jae, do you know her? I wanted to ask her if she wanted to go out for today.”
“She says she’ll meet you in the park after an hour and a half.”
“Great then, oh, and tell her I’ll be missing her until then.”
“Ok, I will.” I said with a slight hint of thrill in my voice.
Right after the call ended, I felt a sudden wave of joy coursing through my entire body as if it were the first time we were going to see each other. I just couldn’t wait to see Jung Yoon again.
It took me a while to realize that I was smiling like a total idiot for when Yo Seob started to burst into laughter. “Wae? Is there something on my face?” “Ani, you just looked really cute.” Even though he says that often I could feel the blood rushing towards my cheeks and by then, I knew I was already blushing. ”You better get ready for your date with Jung Yoon-ssi.” He said teasingly while mouthing Jung Yoon’s name in a sing song voice. I rolled my eyes at him “Arasseo. But are you sure you’re okay with me leaving? What if the monsters will come and get you?” I teased as a attempted to make a scary face at him. “Aniyo, its fine. We can still hang out tomorrow plus I’ll have time to do my Biology report.” He was always such a nerd, always getting high marks on test and getting special praise from the teachers. I guess that’s one of the charms he has that makes people want to be friends with him.

The very moment her phone rang, I knew it was Jung Yoon. Who else would be calling her this early in the morning aside from me? I just sat there acting as if listening to their mushy conversation was the most normal thing to do. Even though she thought it was, it wasn’t for me. It felt really awkward this time. I mean, this wasn’t the first time I overheard their talks on the phone. There was just something different but I can’t quite put my finger on it.
Seeing them together before never really bothered me. I mean, I knew that Yoon Jae would eventually have an interest in those kinds of things. But now when I watch them together, a really weird feeling courses through my body as if it’s reacting to something.
I don’t really know why, but when I see her getting all sweet and lovey-dovey with that Jung Yoon, I kinda wish it were me. As I ponder as to why I feel these things, it hit me. “Could it be…that I like her? Is it that I like her that I’m acting like this?”
Yoon Jae and I have been best friends ever since I got here and I guess it never really crossed my mind. But I’m still uncertain with these feelings. I mean, I wouldn’t even think of getting in-between her and Jung Yoon, after all, Jung Yoon makes her happy and I would do anything just so she can keep on smiling.
I don’t know what to do anymore. Why does everything have to be so complicated?
