The bell ending third period rang and everyone shuffled into the hallway like pack-rats. I clutched onto my bag handle tightly and made my way to the bathroom. Once in there, I set my bag on the counter and pulled out a hair tie. I began pulling my hair back into a french braid and tied it off with the hair tie. I quickly straightened out my outfit and walked out of the bathroom to fourth period.
I walked down the hallway and into room 203 for my physics class with Mr. Grahams. Mr. Grahams was an ambiguously ethnic man; many liked to make a game to try and guess his racial background. No one had the courage to actually ask him. He had the figure of an upside down triangle, and a raspy voice. He was in his late forties and never had times for jokes. I sat near the back of the room next to my best friend Lucia.
Lucia always reminded me of a snake. It's not that she was deceitful or mean; she was simply slender and had the most interesting green eyes I'd ever seen. It was like you could look into her eyes and see every event she's experienced in her entire lifetime. Her thick, dark hair hung down her back nearly to her hips, Lucia had an interesting way about her.
"Hey." Lucia greeted me as I sat down next to her.
"Hey, what's up?" I responded.
"Nothing, but Chad and his boy-toys are talking about you again." She said gesturing over to Chad Quents, my ex-boyfriend and his group of friends standing around a desk, whispering like little girls. Chad and two others were looking directly at me. I shot Chad a menacing look and I could see his confidence shaken away at the mere thought of confrontation with me. I used to be his girlfriend, I knew exactly how his mechanisms worked and exactly how to get to him; he hated that. He cleared his throat and averted his eyes and his friends proceeded to do the same. I sighed and sat down next to Lucia, who was now laughing at them.
"The only reason he does that is because he wants you back you know." Lucia said. "And his friends secretly wanna get in your pants." She added, laughing more.
"Well Chad can get over it. I wouldn't take him back if he was the last guy on Earth. I would date one of his friends, but they're all assholes just like he is." I said, joining in on Lucia's laughter.
"You could do so much better than any of them anyway. They probably have a combined IQ of 95." She said. "Besides, you're the hottest girl in this school. You could literally have any guy in this here if you wanted to."
"Well thanks, but I'm kind of over the guys here. It's too hard to find one that's not completely immature. I think I'll just wait it out until college." I responded.
Just then, Mr. Grahams walked in from the back of the room with black coffee mug and a leather bound book in hand. "Good afternoon, class." Mr. Grahams raspy voice boomed through the room and everyone sat down in their seats. His greeting was punctuated by the bell that shot through the hallways like a low pitched firework.
Mr. Grahams started off into a lecture about the relation of physics and the real world that it what obvious no one was paying much attention to.
What seemed like four hours later, the bell rang again and we all filed out into the hallway. Some of us fluttered happily towards lunch, and others dreaded towards their next classrooms. I followed Lucia through the crowd towards the cafeteria. The cafeteria was slightly less crowded, because we had made it there before the lunch rush that occurred roughly four to five minutes after the bell rang.
After lunch I parted ways with Lucia and headed to my next class in room 814. It took me a while to get there, because it was two buildings over from where the cafeteria was. Once I got there, I walked in and scanned the room for someone I knew. I saw one of Chad's friends who I was still friends with, Thomas Ives. Thomas was very different than Chad, and I always questioned how they even became friends in the first place. Chad was the golden boy, star of the lacrosse team, and Thomas was a photography nerd who for the most part was pretty quiet. I remember asking Thomas how he met Chad, but he refused to tell me and changed the subject.
I walked over and stood next to Thomas, who smiled when he saw me.
"Hey curls!" Thomas exclaimed when he saw me. I rolled my eyes at his nickname for me. He'd called me it since he met me, referring to my curly hair that came down to my lower back.
"You know, one of these days I'm going to figure out a stupid nickname for you too. And you'll hate it so much that you'll stop calling me curls just to get me to stop calling you your nickname." I retorted.
"Sure whatever you say curls." Thomas giggled. I laughed and sat down behind him. A tall and familiar figure walked in the classroom holding a stack of papers. He scanned over the number of students already sitting down, including me. Mr. Gillian's eyes stopped and widened at me and I looked up at him and gave him a half smile. He returned the gesture and continued towards his desk.
