Chapter 1

Dreams come true finally, for Lady Sayuri to bear children. The kingdom of Matsusato is celebrating. Almost all the townsfolk sighed in relief. For the long wait for an heir of the royal throne coincided with a bountiful harvest.

That afternoon, celebrations all over the place. While king consort Eichiro asked the townsfolk to be discreet, news spread quickly even outside of Matsusato. This period perhaps could attract enemies while the queen is recovering, he thought . He instructed the royal guard to be on watch and proceeded to the queen's royal chamber.

"My queen." He bowed as he greeted Sayuri.

Sayuri smiled at him, "I told you not to be so formal, king consort Eichiro..."

"My apologies, but still I'm not used to this..." Eichiro replied while raising his head, "besides, you also called me king consort."

"Look..." Sayuri said while still smiling, She showed the twins sleeping peacefully together in a separate bed.

Eichiro smiled as he touched the hands of the twins, "They're beautiful just like you, my queen."

"Perhaps you decide on naming them, king consort?" Sayuri teased.

"Ah no, my queen. It is you who should do it. They will be the next of your generation. Besides, these princesses, they deserved to be given proper names." Eichiro replied while caressing Sayuri's head.

The queen rolled her eyes, "They are your daughters, king consort. I don't see anything wrong with that."

Eichiro looked away as he responded, "My queen, I am just a lowly royal guard who became the king consort. The people know that your wisdom is the main source of this kingdom."

Sayuri, despite being weakened of giving birth, reached his head and tapped him, "Fine, my love. I'll name the younger one, you name the elder one."

"Alright, it's a deal." The king consort answered. He lifted the elder one, who has a birthmark on her left wrist, "I was nothing but a disposable soldier. I got nothing but the guidance of the princess. Now I maybe a king, but nothing compared to the queen. Therefore, I shall name her Rei." he proclaimed.

Sayuri pouted, "You know, you're being too formal on that again. But it's amazing you have thought about her name because of your past."

"I can't help it, my love. Without you, I don't know the meaning of life." Eichiro was teary-eyed, "I never thought of you to be choosing me as your husband at all. I don't see myself to be worthy of your affection."

The queen caressed his face, "You may be just a soldier, but for me, you are the light the shines." then she lifted the younger twin with a noticeable birthmark on her right wrist, "Within the darkness that I've been through, your light guided me to the right path. Therefore, her name will be Hikari."

Eichiro smiled at the queen, "My queen, it is a pleasant name for her."

"It's because of you, my love.," Sayuri replied.

The twins Hikari and Rei grew up with different paths to take. While Rei is brash and full of confidence in everything she does, Hikari is shy, silent but calculated. Whenever there are disputes involving the royal family or the country, the younger plans and the elder do the battle. Hikari deflects the credit every time their mission is success. Rei sees this as an act.

"My dear mother, I am glad to tell you that we have done the razing of the western villages." Rei reported after a grueling battle.

"The leader of the eastern village surrendered their property to us. No casualties on both sides." Hikari drops her battle report.
