Chapter Two
“Are you okay?” Cole asked once again as he turned his head to give me a quick glance before training his eyes back in the road. He had asked me if I was okay every 5 minutes since we left with was about 7-8 hours ago and every time I wouldn’t respond. It was a bit of a stupid question if you ask me, of course I’m not going to be fine when my mom is dead and my father decided to leave me.
I sighed looking out the window, it wasn’t like I could see anything, well I could see outlines of houses but that was about it. The only light was from the headlights of the car. I really had no idea where we were going, I mean if this thing is worldwide then how can anywhere to safe? I don’t even think Cole has any idea where he’s going, it seems that he’s just going down different roads to see if it gets him somewhere.
Tears silently slid down my face as I thought back to this morning and how it changed everything. It was setting in that I won’t ever see my mom again and by the looks of it my dad.
I’m alone.
Everyone had turned off the lights in the house, it was weird. Everything seemed eerie now; there weren’t even any cries from people or startling screams. It was quiet and if you ask me too quiet. Though I don’t think I was the only one thinking this as Cole brought me out of my thought with a mumble to himself.
“Something’s not right” He muttered thinking I wouldn’t be able to hear it.
“Something’s not right?! Of course something is not right! The sun has disappeared by the mass of clouds, there are some weird creatures out, oh and did I forget to mention that my mom is DEAD?!” I screeched causing Cole to jump in his seat not expecting a reply from me.
“Shawna I’m sor-
Before Cole could finish his sentence the car hit something hard causing the car swerved. I was smashed up against my window as Cole tired to get control back of the car. My head hit the back of the passenger seat as the car was pulled to an abrupt stop. My head began to pound, I squeezed my eyes shut tightly to try and stop the pulsating pain.
“Ouch” I cried as I gingerly touch the left side of my forehead where the throbbing pain was coming from. I forced my eyes open to look at the sticky texture on my fingers; I pulled my fingers away to see crimson blood coating them. My eyes began to water again; I have never been good with pain, not of any kind.
“Shawna are you okay?” Cole’s frantic voice filled the car; I lifted my head to meet his gaze. His eyes widened with worry before he brought a hand to the fresh bloody cut on my forehead. I heard him mutter a curse before his door opened. I look back down at my head before a shooting pain shot across the front of my forehead making my shut my eyes firmly.
I felt the harsh wind on my bare legs as my door was opened. A hand rested on my right cheek pushing slightly to turn my head. I knew that it was Cole; I think he was taking a closer look at my head as I could feel his warm breath fan my face. I winched slightly as he brushed his fingers over the open cut.
“Shawn” He murmured. “Can you open your eyes for me?” he asked softly using his thumb from his hand on my right cheek to rub gentle circles on my skin.
I let my eye’s relax before I slowly opened them; I jumped back slightly seeing how close we both were. I could feel his breath on my lips as he looked straight into my eyes. I’m not sure what he was looking for but I didn’t care at this point. I found myself hooking my arms round his neck before flinging myself into him resting my head in the crook of his neck as I let my sobs free. Cole got over his shock as he wrapped his arms around my before pulling my flush against his body, cooing me softly. He finally pulled me out of his embrace and looked my straight in the eyes.
