chapter one; the meeting

"WELL, THAT'S THE LAST OF IT" your mother said, dropping the last of your boxes on the front porch of the building you would be staying at.
you hummed, not really acknowledging what she said as you stared up at the building, contemplating on whether or not you should just go back to your hometown and attend the shitty universities there, because right now, this seemed too big for you to tackle on your own. maybe living on your own at the young age of 18 was not the best idea, i mean, your mother would need you right? she would need you to take care of the house while she was working her overcomplicated hours at the hospital.
anxiously, you looked back at the lady, smiling nervously as your eyes filled with tears, needing absolutely nothing to set you off so you began crying; "momma, maybe i should just stay back home this year, you know, take a leap year and stay home with you" you said, desperation filling your voice with each word that left your mouth
opting not to answer your question, your mother stepped forward and wrapped her arm around your shoulders pulling you toward her and making your head rest in the crook of her neck, you inhaled deeply, taking in her comforting scent for what might be the last time until you saw her again. your tears threatened to drop when you felt your mother place her head on top of yours, gently kissing the crown of your head as she softly sniffed.
a few moments later she hummed, letting you as you stood up straight, looking at the older woman who was wiping away her tears with a napkin, she looked at you and smiled gently, taking her thumbs and dragging them under your eyes, wiping away your tears; "who gave you permission to get so big huh?" she asked, laughing gently as the smallest of smiles made its way onto your face

you sighed as you packed the last of your things away, standing in the middle of your now decorated living room, you looked around the room, satisfied with the outcome of it. another sigh left your lips as you fell back onto your plush couch.
you were alone now, your mother left about an hour ago, saying that getting out of the city would become more of a problem the later it became. you hummed when she told you this, smiling at her softly from where you stood in your kitchen as you hung your plants. then she walked over to you, grabbing her car keys and kissing the top of your forehead as she told you that she would see you soon
when was 'soon' though? soon, could be anytime. it could be tomorrow, or maybe next week, it could even be two months from now. in a way, the meaning of the word soon was fake, because people used it to be vague about periods of time. instead of giving a set period of time, people said soon; 'we'll meet up soon!', 'i'll do it soon!', 'we should go out soon'.
the sound of your stomach grumbling knocked you out of your thoughts, you looked up at the clock that hung above your piano, 5:05 it read, you sighed ( something you've done a lot today you noted ) and stood up from your couch, grabbing your purse and apartment keys from the island, you made your way over to the mahogany door, pulling on your shoes and opening the door. as you left your apartment, you saw a couple standing by the apartment next to yours, maybe they were your neighbours.
they seemed nice.

you entered the convenient store just a few blocks away from your building, growing grateful that you chose the building you did to live in, it was just a 20 minute walk from campus and it had a good number of stores surrounding it.
you immediately went to the frozen foods section, opting for premade dinner instead of buying ingredients to make yourself something, that would take too much of the little energy you had. you opened one of the freezers and took out a pizza, the box read pepperoni, you were happy with that. then you made your way over to the alcohol section, looking for a bottle of red wine.
when you found what you were looking for you smiled to yourself, going to take the bottle. just as you were about to take it, another hand reached out and took it first. you looked up and was met with the sight of a blonde male, he was holding the bottle of wine you wanted
"you look like crap" he said, watching your slight smile morph into a frown as the confused expression fell from your face and was replaced with a hardened glare.
it was true, you knew you looked crappy, i mean how else would you look when you've just finished setting up your apartment, alone, might i add, but he didn't need to point that out.
"you too" you said, your frown deepening at the smirk that appeared on his face, because he knew he didn't look like crap, and you knew he didn't look like crap.
he looked the opposite of crap actually, what was the opposite of crap? whatever it was, he looked like that, if you were bold enough, you would call him pretty, could you even call a man pretty? whatever, he was pretty and apparently he knew it very well
"you're starin' sweetheart," he said, grabbing another bottle of wine and gently putting it in your hand.
you felt your cheeks redden, praying to whomever above that this blonde ass couldn't see it, though, you it was quite the opposite, and you knew this because of the snort he let out.
'i'll see you around, yeah?" he asked, looking at you expectantly
you hummed and nodded at him, and with that, the blonde man winked at you, leaving you alone in the wine aisle.
then you realised you never got his name.
