"How do you stand being single?" Kiari asked.
"Ummm, I don't know, but I kinda wish I had someone to have fun with," I answered.
“Jakie you don’t need a guy to have fun. What about you and I go to that new teen club tonight?” she asked.
“I don’t know… I mean my parents might kill me, Matt will murder you…” I trailed off running my fingers through my long curly blonde hair.
“Well Matt doesn’t need to know,” she said.
“Okay, I’ll tell my parents I’m going to the pool,” I said.
“Well in that case we need you to get more suntan lotion on you, and put on your sunglasses,” Kiari ordered.
“My skin is tan enough,” I argued.
“No, you are as pale as a vampire,” she said. It was true. I was very white. I chuckled, but I did as told.
After everything was applied on my legs and arm, I stripped into my bikini. I heard Kiari whistle. I slapped her with my tank top and shorts. “Where are you going sexy lady?” she asked.
“For a walk. Watch my stuff please,” I said.
“Okay,” she agreed. I started, barefoot, across the sand.
All the shells stared at me. They seemed to say ‘PICK ME UP!’, but I never did. I wanted the perfect one. Looking at the ground my mind wandered; it went from what shell do I want to I wonder which of these surfers is the cutest and best one? Finally, something sparkled in the sand. I bent over and stuck my hand in the sand.
I pulled out a perfect shell; it was beautiful, perfect, sparkly, shiny, purple, and gorgeous. I started to walk again. A few minutes later, I tripped on a rock, and I fell on my butt and felt my white cheeks get very hot. I looked back and saw the rock I tripped on. It was a tiny thing about the size oy my fist. I turned around, and my face was greated with salt water. I tried comming up for air, but I just did somersalts in the water. I finallly got some air when the waves retracted.
After trying to get up, but being knocked down by waves (I was soaked), I felt big, strong, tan, arms pick me off the ground and set me on my feet. When I was up, I looked at my savor. I looked at his big blue eyes when his blonde surfer hair fell in his face.
“Thanks. I should go,” I said turning away.
He grabbed my arm, and I turned around. “Wait. Do you want to you know go for a walk?” he asked. “I’m Zach by the way. So?” Zach asked again.
“Um I don’t know,” I said.
“Do you trust me?” Zach asked.
“I love Aladdin, so yes,” I said. Zach laughed but started walking.
I followed and the conversation started. “I never learned you name,” Zach said.
“Oh yeah. I’m Jakie,” I said shaking his hand.
“I’m Zach,” Zach reintroduced himself. I laughed. We started walking again.
“So, what’s your favorite candy, color, and word?” Zach asked.
“Random, but Marshmallow Peeps, Purple, and Pants,” I answered.
“I think there are Purple Marshmallow Peeps wearing Pants,” he said. I stopped in my tracks. “Your head so exploded right now,” he said. I laughed because it was obvious it did.
“So, what is your favorite candy, color, and word?” I asked.
“Jelly beans, Yellow, and Fudge,” Zach stated.
“Huh. I know there are Yellow Jelly Beans and Fudge flavored Jelly Beans,” I said.
“Not as cool as mine though,” he said.
“Nope,” I said popping my mouth on the “P”.
We continued to walk and talk. Occasionally talking about nothing in general. Zach would always beat me, and I would always take five minutes to figure out a cool comeback. I started talking about my friends.
“Kiari is dating Matt, and I feel like the third wheel all the time,” I confessed.
“Why?” Zach asked.
“I’m single, and I jealous,” I said quietly.
“What’s wrong with being single?” Zach asked.
“Well I guess you wouldn’t know,” I said.
“What does that mean? I’m single too,” he said.
“Oh, It just seemed like you would be in a relationship,” I said embarrassed.
“Well I’m not. I don’t mind being single. It’s nice to be my own person,” Zach said. I just nodded.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be talking so much. I’ve said a lot,” I said.
“No, I like hearing you talk. I always talk at school. It’s nice just to listen,” Zach said.
“Well I’m kinda quiet in my circle of friends. I like talking just not you know?” I asked not being able to find the words.
“Yeah, I do,” Zach said, “Any other friend drama?” I searched my mind before answering.
“Well Alex broke up with her first boyfriend Jackson and won’t tell me why,” I said frustrated.
“Well maybe she didn’t want you to know about it,” he said turning towards me.
“But why?” I asked.
I could feel his breath in my face when he said, “Are you going to tell her about this?”
“No,” I said.
“Exactly,” Zach said leaning in then turning on his heel away from me. I liked this kid, but I hated his teasing.
After the almost-kiss, we went down by the water. I walked out to wear the waves are up to my waist. I started jumping. I felt Zach wrap his arms around my waist, and I knew what was coming. “ZACH! NO!” I yelled.
“TOO LATE!” Zach yelled throwing me. I came up for air, and the war was on. We were throwing water for a while.
After about an hour or so, I realized I had to get back to Kiari. “I have to go, but I’ll meet you at the pool in an hour?” I asked.
“Yeah, I’ll see you then. Nice meeting you Jakie,” Zach said before giving me a hug.
“’Bye Zach. Nice meeting you too,” I said walking away. I turned around, and I felt a smile creeping onto my lips. By the time I got to Kiari, I was grinning full out.
“Who? What? When? Where? How? Why?” Kiari asked.
“Zach, I met a boy, about an hour ago, on the beach, I fell on my butt, and he helped me up, and I liked him,” I finished.
“Did he kiss you?” she asked.
"No. He teased me though," I said with a smile. Now she was grinning ear to ear even with what I just said. “I’m meeting him at the pool in an hour though, so we gotta hurry,” I said. That made Kiari go superhuman fast. I was laughing the whole time.
