This is a story that highlights the POLITICAL and SOCIAL problems and arguements currently being had in the US right now. But I promise it doesn't lack any romance at all. A completely political and social drama would be too boring for my taste; but this is just to show what the modern world is like for a normal teenager.
This story focuses on the sensitive topics of: gun control, gay rights, economic struggles, marijuana legalization, alcohol, police brutality, abortion, the death sentence, and religion.
By the way, I do not condone ANY of the behavior that goes on in this story. What goes on are REAL LIFE EVENTS that real people go through, not me personally, and neither should you. Drugs are bad. :)

Chapter 1:
Chapter 1: Akron
I guess you could call us southern here in Akron, Alabama; I mean, this state is sitting in the southern-most part of the US. But I’m a little too fond of labels, so I divided the town in half between those with southern hospitality and the southern hillbillies. I personally wouldn’t want to be a hillbilly. A girl moved down here a couple years ago to be with her family, she had originally lived in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She told me that in Fredericksburg there were lots of southern acting types of people, and I understood -- Virginia is considered southern. But she told me that they liked to be called ‘redneck.’
I was awestruck -- what an awful thing to want to be called! But whatever floats their boat. The girl who told me this baffling information, her name is Lucy Lawrence -- she goes by Lu. Lu was my best friend, she told me everything. My parents were friends with her grandparents, because they had been friends with my mom‘s parents. But Lu’s mother didn’t like Akron after a while and wanted to experience more. That was before Lu and I were born, they moved back to Akron when Lu was in fifth grade and we’ve been best friends ever since.
Lu and I are sixteen -- and today is my birthday. June 16th; the day school gets out for summer vacation. Lu drove me to a local diner called Kate’s Korner, though it wasn’t even located on a corner -- which seemed stupid to me but, oh well, they had great cheesecake.
I was always so jealous of Lu; she was gorgeous. Her hair was cut short to her shoulders and was a sleek blonde color. She didn’t tan, so her skin was a luminous white color with few freckles. Her eyes were a rare emerald green color. She was tall and thin, she was perfect. I, on the other hand was the complete opposite of Lu. My hair was long -- but I loved it -- and wavy, down to about my bellybutton. My eyes are brown, and I could tan under a light bulb. I was currently a nice golden brown. I had full lips, I saw them as fat, and my cheekbones poked out too much. I wasn’t perfect, but Lu seemed to be, and that’s how I wanted to be. Lu was also tall -- a whopping 5’9. I was a meager 5’1.
I never told Lu about how I thought she was so much prettier than I was, I figured it make her feel bad. Everything makes Lu feel bad. She was a good person, unlike me; I never seemed to feel sorry for anything I did. I figured everything I did had a valid reason behind it.
We pulled into Kate’s Korner and Lu said, “I’ll buy ya a cheesecake and some ice-cream, how’s that sound?”
I squealed in delight, “Thank the lord,” I fanned my face dramatically, “I’m famished.”
Lu laughed at me. As I opened the door I smashed into the brick wall of humidity outside. I gasped, Alabama in the summer was a little too humid for my taste. I could feel my hair beginning to frizz up.
