Chapter 2
"How was it?" Snowmist asked.
"It was wonderful but also a bit scary." Feathermist admitted.
She had just come back from the half-moon meeting with the medicine cats and was feeling ecstatic yet exhausted. Slimtail had come to her in her dreams and congratulated her. Feathermist had also seen Stormclaw, her father, again.
"I knew you could do it." Snowmist replied. Bringing her closer, he whispered, "Feathermist, I know it's not allowed but... I want to be mates with you."
Feathermist held her breath.
"I would love to!" She leaned closer. "But it has to be a secret. Nobody can know."
Snowmist smiled. "Of course, it would have to be." He murmured.
"What will we do when I have kits?" Feathermist suddenly burst out..
Snowmist looked thoughtfully at Feathermist.
"We'll run away. You know Flower's Tallpaw nest? There's an abandoned barn near there. We can go there." Snowmist suggested.
"You're a genius! This will be wonderful!" Feathermist murmured.
"Anyways, see you later. I have dawn patrol tomorrow morning." Snowmist flicked his tail in dismissal and disappeared into the warrior den.
Feathermist sighed, grabbed a piece of fresh-kill and padded off to the medicine den.
"Feathermist! I thought I told you to get some rest!" Sparkflight meowed sternly.
"I... um... I was getting you fresh-kill and then I... uh... ran into Snowmist." Feathermist stuttered.
Sparkflight shook his head in amusement. "Sometimes I feel like you two are too close. You know medicine cats are forbidden to..."
"Have mates. Yeah, I know Sparkflight. I was taught that a long time ago." Feathermist interrupted roughly. "Besides, we're just good friends."
Sparkflight eyed her suspiciously for a moment and then mewed, "Thanks for the food. Get some rest. You'll need it because tomorrow is going to be your first day as a fully trained medicine cat."
Feathermist purred a friendly good night and went to her nest. A heavy feeling of dread was lingering inside her. What if Snowmist and I get caught?
A few sunrises had past and Feathermist was sharing tongues with her litter mates, who were now young warriors when suddenly, Windpelt and Whitestream raced into the camp.
"Foxes! A whole pack of them! They're heading our way and-and we think they're here to attack our camp!" Windpelt yowled.
"Hold on, Windpelt. Slow down." Cloudstar meowed.
"We have to protect the camp!" Whitestream insisted. Feathermist saw Silverpool push her way out of the den.
"Why are you standing there, you mouse-brain? Stop dawdling and get your warriors in place!" Silverpool snapped at Cloudstar, a glint of humour in her eyes.
Feathermist bit back her laugh. Every cat knew that only Silverpool and Mistshine were bold enough to call their leader a mouse-brain. After all, they were Cloudstar's daughters.
"Silverpool's right." Bluetail piped up. "Warriors, apprentices, get ready to fight. Queens protect the nursery. Rosedawn and Thornleaf, take the elders as far away as possible. Take them to and stay there until I send a warrior to get you when the foxes are gone." She ordered.
