The New Sun Orphanage was located so that its sad residents could fully enjoy their childhood. It was located on a small Oceanic island where the water was warm and clear, and where life was good. The building stood in a secluded coconut forest, and only a kilometer away was the beach, resplendent as ever. Swimming in such a place was a wonderful experience, with warm water and small sharks of absolute beauty.

Wei Wuxian, like all the other children, could have enjoyed this atmosphere of vacation and paradise. But he was still an orphan. And compared to most of the children here, he remembered his parents very well, and how they died. A death as violent as theirs is a rare occurrence. Both parents had been brutally killed, for the simple reason that they were at the wrong time in the wrong place.

Ever since the macabre incident he had witnessed, Wei Wuxian had felt horribly alone. He couldn't relate to the others. He stayed in his own cocoon, much to the dismay of the adults at the orphanage. No matter how much they tried to get him to socialize, it had the opposite effect, and the poor boy became more and more withdrawn.

Staring blankly at the other children at play while not moving an inch - such was the grim daily life of a child who had lost everything at just 5 years of age.

However, there was one thing he did want to do one day, and that was to sneak out of the building at night and head for a secluded beach where no one had ever set foot. The place was beautiful, the air was warm and pleasant, and the stars shone brightly in the sky. Wei Wuxian sat down in the sand and stared at the stars for half an hour. Then a shooting star passed by. So he did what anyone would do: he made a wish.

I'd like to smile again.

After that, he stood up and walked along the sea, staring up at the stars. As he did so, he bumped into something and fell headlong into the white sand. He picked himself up, terribly annoyed, before staring at the stone that had tripped him, to kick it in revenge.

But, stunned, he discovered that it wasn't a stone that had caused him to fall. Or anything, for that matter. A boy around his own age lay on the ground, completely unconscious. Wei Wuxian bent over to try and wake her up, until he saw something that revolutionized his thinking. The boy had a deep purple flipper instead of legs. Wei Wuxian stared at the tail for a few minutes. He'd just found a mermaid. A real mermaid. Or rather a newt.

He picked him up and carried him back to the water as best he could. Barely in the clear liquid, the boy suddenly opened his eyes before slipping out of Wei Wuxian's arms and into the open sea. The orphan stared sadly in the direction he had gone. He would have liked to talk to him. But apparently, that would never happen.

The very next day, he had regained his energy, which totally changed his mood. When no one was looking, he ran to the famous beach where he had seen and touched the mystical creature just that night. At the water's edge, he caught his breath.

-It's me, you know, the one from last night! I just want to talk to you!

By way of reply, only the wind slapped his face. So he just sat there, waiting. He had nothing to lose anyway. He wouldn't give in, even for a lost cause. So he waited, and waited for hours, by the vast ocean. And when sleep overtook him and he was just about to fall asleep, he heard someone wading strangely in the water, coming closer to him. He suddenly opened his eyes and found the same boy as yesterday staring at him, just a few meters away.

Shy at first, Wei Wuxian waved his hand in greeting. The boy responded timidly with the same gesture.

-Thank you.
