"Mr. Augustin! Mr. Augustin!" A man ran frantically into Rosalinde's farm interrupting them from their work. "What, what is it?" Mr. Augustin said, dropping his rake onto the ground. The man stopped in front of them panting and trying to catch his breath. Rosalinde and Jonas approached with concerned and curious looks on their face. "Haven't you heard? Did you hear what happened to Jürgen's farm?" The man said in between breaths. "They were raided! Everything is gone! Their home is just a pile of ashes, I saw it with my own eyes. Oh, that poor family." Mr. Augustin was taken aback. "What? How could that have happened? Kids go inside!" Mr. Augustin said while waving his arm at Rosalinde and Jonas. But curiosity made them stay put to listen. "They don't know. We don't know. They didn't see their faces because they struck at night." "Could it have been hirichurls?" Mr. Augustin asked. "No they weren't they spoke Russian. Hirichurls just speak rubbish." "Russian? So they aren't from around here that's for sure."
"Everyone's in a panic. We're all going to Master Abelard's mansion to ask for help."
"I'll go with you." Mr. Augustin said firmly.
"Rosa, Jonas, you stay here and continue your work. I'll be back soon."
"But, pa?" Rosalinde ran up and clung to his sleeve. "It's okay, Rosa, you have nothing to worry about. Jonas will stay and protect you." Jonas took Rosa's arm. "It's okay." Jonas said reassuring her. Rosalinde looked at Jonas, then her father. "..okay." She complied. And Mr. Augustin went off with the man.

It was quite a walk to the Abelard mansion but when they arrived they were met with the rest of the group of farmers standing together in the courtyard. They were all chatting amongst themselves and even the poor family were there, the wife sobbing in her husbands arms. Soon a butler came out of the doors to greet them. "We need to see Abelard now!" One man from the crowd called and others in the group shouted "yeah!" In reply. "Please, settle down and return to your homes." The prestige butler said in a proper tone. "We're not going anywhere we demand an audience." Another person said. Mr. Augustin stood and watched silently amongst the crowd. Seeming as the butler couldn't handle the crowd on his own he returned into the home and soon Abelard came outside with an annoyed expression. "What on earth is all this ruckus about, return to your farms now!" Abelard declared but the crowd didn't budge. "Please you have to help us." The wife of the family said moving to the front of the crowd. "Our entire farm is gone we have nothing!" She cried. Abelard paused and kept his oblivious composure. "I'm terribly sorry but there is nothing I can do to help you and your family. Now if you would all-" "That's a lie! We've served you for decades and you say you can't offer anything in return?!" The husband yelled. Abelard was now getting impatient and his eyebrows furrowed into his wrinkly face. "You are in no position to be giving me orders! I assure you all there is no need to panic so get back to work! This was only to happen once and it won't affect any other farms so there is no reason for you to not be working." Abelard spoke to the whole group avoiding the victim's gaze. "What do you mean 'it was only to happen once' is there something you're not telling us?" Someone said suspiciously. Abelard seemed to be struck with panic. "Guards! Get these peasants off my property at once!" Abelard screamed and turned his back on the group that continued to retort and holler. The guards forced everyone out of the front lawn, shoving and pushing anyone who fought back. Mr. Augustin had seen all the chaos he wanted to see and started his way back home. Questions and confusion ran through his solitary walk home. Never in his many years of working for Abelard did anything happen at this scale. He worked for Abelard his entire life but he ignored all the mistreatment. For deep down he knew he was only a peasant and could do nothing more. Retaliating never even crossed his mind, for keeping his family safe and sound was all that he cared about. But was complying with Abelard not even safe for his family? Had his family ever been safe from anything? When he returned home to Rosalinde she could see the distress on his face but he said nothing. He shut himself in the house and wouldn't let her in. "What could have happened?" She thought. She was always worried about him and his well-being. But there wasn't much she could do for she was only a child. A frown curved on her lips as she continued cleaning the barn. Recently she did nothing but worry. Everything in her world was so unpredictable and it scared her young mind. And so she was left with feeling helpless as always.
