A few weeks later

The sun had set over the horizon, and the sky was an ocean of darkness. Thick clouds hid the starry sky from vision. Rosalinde's family were asleep, Jonas sleeping in his bed across from hers, but something about the strange atmosphere tonight was keeping her awake. She wore her white nightgown that was silky and cool to the touch. Rosalinde had a long and exhausting day. The neighborhood had been slowly going back to normal. But Mr. Augustin still seemed to be in a state of depression and wasn't working as hard as he usually did on the farm. Rosalinde sat in her bed, staring out the window at a tall bushy tree rustling eerily in the chilly night wind. A few black birds flew ahead to retire for the night, but otherwise, strangely no crickets were chirping and no frogs were croaking. It was dead silent. "What will I do tomorrow.." she wondered. "Maybe Pa will feel better in the morning." She knew her father was depressed and felt as if she didn't have time to contemplate her own feelings. Everyday she felt a deep pit in her heart. Like a deep never ending hole. She wished her mother was there to fill it and give her a positive outlook on life like she always had. The house was quiet and creaky. She could only hear the sound of the wind rustling the trees from outside. "Snap!" Suddenly she thought she heard something else coming from outside her window. Like a twig snapping. An animal perhaps? Leaning closer to her window she peeked out into the dark night. She could make out a tall shadow moving from around the house but then it faded into the night. 'What was that'? She thought. Rosalinde had a bad feeling deep in the bottom of her stomach. Something was wrong. Suddenly a loud crash made her jump. It sounded like glass shattering.

Rosalinde was too horrified to leave her room, overwhelmed by the intense atmosphere. She wished her mother was there to hold her. Leaping out of bed she went over to Jonas and began shaking him awake. He groaned while turning over. "Wake up! Wake up! Did you hear that?" She said in a frantic whisper. "Uugh, go back to bed, Rosa." He said in a raspy voice turning back over to sleep. "Please wake up, I'm scared!" Rosalinde continued to shake him. "I heard something break." Jonas finally sat up rubbing his eyes. "It's probably just your imagination." It didn't take long to convince Jonas because another crash came from in the kitchen. Jonas' eyebrows furrowed and he got out of bed. "What was that?" He said in a whisper. "I don't know, go get dad!" All of a sudden Rosalinde began to smell something. It smelled thick and ashy like something was burning. And a bright flickering light could be seen from behind the door. "I'm going to get dad." Jonas said and he opened the door. Rosalinde didn't want to be alone and so she followed right after him down the short dark hall. Jonas went into their father's room but Rosalinde stayed. The bright light was getting brighter and more intense. So too was her anxiety, but she went around the corner to the kitchen. A wave of heat caused her to stumble as she was met with the horrifying scene. Their kitchen was in flames, blazing and growing. Rosalinde's eyes widened and she froze staring at the flames latching on to the cabinets and spreading quickly. Soon Mr. Augustin and Jonas were by her side staring in horror at their once beloved kitchen. "Oh my god!" Mr. Augustin yelled. "Everyone get out of the house and stay away from the flames!" Rosalinde and the others ran to the front door. The smoke was so thick she couldn't breathe and the ash stuck to her clothes tainting it in black. They barely made it out in time before the flames engulfed the entire room. The air was cold outside and the fire lit up the night sky. Rosalinde backed away from the house as the black smoke flew into the air and the roof began to crumble. Tears formed in her eyes as she hugged her father's leg. How could this have happened? Everything was perfectly fine and things were finally going back to normal. Why did these things always happen to her and her family? She couldn't handle anymore tragedy before and now this. What was she to do now?

"So this is the Augustin family?" A strange and unfamiliar voice suddenly spoke causing them all to swing around. A tall and dark luminous figure stood standing before them, two more by his side. "Who the hell are you and what do you want?!" Mr. Augustin said while standing in front of Rosalinde and Jonas. Rosalinde gasped when she saw them. Their dark and unfamiliar aura crept their evil hands up to her and caused her to begin shaking. Who were these strange people? "Who we are doesn't concern you. But what we want determines your fate so you best comply.." The other two began to chuckle menacingly from behind him. "Turn away now we have nothing to give you." Mr. Augustin said seriously. They all began to laugh loudly, their voices booming through the night. Without saying another word they began approaching eerily. "Stay back!" The grabbed Mr. Augustin and shoved him away. Mr. Augustin struggled and fought back but two of the men shoved him to the ground and held him their. "Pa!" Rosalinde screamed. Jonas began to run from the approaching man but the man's long arm snatched him and latched onto him. "Get off of me!" Jonas kicked in screamed. Rosalinde watched in horror all alone, tears streaming down her face. "Don't touch my children! Please I'll give you what you want just leave them be!" Mr. Augustin pleaded despite the heavy pressure that we was being held down with. The man let go of the thrashing boy and Jonas fell to the ground. "That's more like it." The man said and waved his hand for his men to stand down. "Slaughter all the animals, we will be needing the meat for tonight." "No!" Rosalinde screamed and immediately regretted speaking, for all the men turned to look at her. Rosalinde froze in horror at the tall man before her. "Rosa, please stay out of this." Mr. Augustin said with fear in his voice. That's when Rosalinde got a good look at the man staring down at her. She couldn't see his face from behind his red mask. He wore a long black coat adorned with thick black fur with a hood covering his head. Tall boots with spikes at the end that would intimidate anyone that laid their eyes upon them. Rosalinde stared with wide and teary eyes up at the man. She thought she was done for and he was sure to hurt her. But he turned away and signaled the men to go do as he has told. The next few minutes Rosalinde kneeled down and cried, her father and brother laying their defeatedly. They all felt helpless and powerless against the strange men. Everything had happened so fast and now they were left with nothing. Their home continued to succumb to the flames, the wooden roof finally collapsing into a heap of sparks and ashes.

When the men returned they carried a large bag soaked in blood. Rosalinde's heart sank as she saw it. Her cherished memories with her animals flashed in her memory. "Alright, that's the last of them." Said on of the other men as he dropped the bag to the ground. "You all are monsters!" Mr. Augustin suddenly shouted as he boiled with anger and helplessness. "Keep quiet!" One of the men said as he sent a hard kick right into Mr. Augustin's gut causing him to roll over. "Pa!" Rosalinde wailed in horror. All the men laughed and continued to stomp and kick him over and over again just for pleasure's sake. Mr. Augustin's screams echoing through the night. "Stop!" Jonas yelled and tried to push one of the men off of him. But they shoved his insignificant figure away with ease onto the ground. When they had finished Mr. Augustin's face was battered and bruised, blood oozing from his mouth. Jonas and Rosalinde both ran to their father's side on the ground. Even Jonas began to cry. The men gathered their things and began to leave. Finally it was all over, Rosalinde thought.

But the tall man took something strange out of his pocket. It was a glowing syringe, and as he stared, it was like he was mesmerized by its light. "Hey, boss." One of the men turned around. "Is that what I think it is? You know you're not supposed to have that, it's for the-"
"Oh come on, no one will notice that it's gone. I'm tired of playing by these stupid rules." The tall man seemed to be getting more angrier by the second. "I sacrificed EVERYTHING to get my position and yet Il Dottore STILL won't accept me." "I'll show him just what I can handle.."
