Chapter 18

The motel was quiet when they arrived. Dean, Sam, and Shane all slowly walked into the room. Shane pausing briefly outside the door. Once they were inside, Sam took a seat on one of the beds, Dean headed for the fridge, and Shane slumped into one of the chairs. Dean grabbed three beers from the fridge, and handed one to Sam. He walked towards the table where Shane was sitting and set a beer down in front of her.

"Here," Dean stated, sliding the bottle closer to Shane.

"I may not remember much about regular life, Dean, but I remember being underage for alcohol consumption."

Dean chuckled, "I don't think anyone here is going to rat you out."

Shane glanced at the unopened bottle. She smiled, grabbed it, and popped the cap off, taking a small glug of the liquid before setting the bottle back on the table.

They sat in silence for a while, just drinking. It felt like everyone was waiting for someone to say something.

"Who's hungry?" Dean pipped up.

Shane and Sam chuckled. Sam stood up, "I'll go grab something. I think you guys need a few minutes to catch up." Sam walked out of the room. The impala engine started, and slowly the motel room returned to silence.

Neither Dean nor Shane said anything for what felt like hours. Dean sat there, just watching Shane. He had so many questions: how did she feel? What did she remember? How did she get a
the demon out of her head? But, ultimately, he was too scared to ask.

The silence felt awkward. It felt like they didn't even know each other anymore. It'd been so long since they'd been able to talk together, and now, neither of them had anything to say. So they both kept their eyes anchored on their bottles.

"Four years, huh?" Shane's tired voice broke the silence.

"Yeah," Dean mumbled, surprised that Shane had spoken, "four years."

"This... whole thing... I'm.... Im sorry, Dean."

"Sorry about what?"

Shane sighed, "getting possessed, getting you two involved with these demons that've been chasing me, and just... well.... everything else. If I hadn't gotten you two involved..."

"We would've gotten involved anyway, Shane. Our dad sent us the case information. Not you. You didn't 'get us involved,' we involved ourselves. It's not your fault, Kiddo."

Shane didn't say anything. The silence returned. Dean looked over at her. She looked so weak. Beaten. Defenseless. Crushed. He'd seen her look like that only once before. She looked the exact same way when she found out her family had been killed by a demon all those years ago.

"I walked away."

"What?" Dean asked, baffled by her out of the blue statement.

"I walked away from the crash that night. " Dean saw Shane's eyes well with tears. "I couldn't force myself to stay. I tried. I tried running back to the car, I tried screaming for help. I watched myself kill people. Innocent people. I saw my body taking the lives of people. People who tried to help me. People who did help me. I saw myself beating you and Sam. I've had no control for the past four years, and now..." She turned back into a defeated, quiet girl, wiping the tears from her eyes, "it still feels like there's something in my head. It doesn't feel like I'm actually me."

Dean stood up and walked to sit next to Shane. "It's you."

"But how do I know? How do you know? How does anyone know that thing's really gone?"

Dean put a hand on her shoulder, "because I remember you. This," he smiled gesturing to her, "this is you. Sure, that demon didn't come out in a conventional way, but it's out. You got it out. And I don't doubt for a second that this is you."

"What's wrong with me?"

"What?"

"No one that I've ever heard of has ever done what I did. You guys told me the only way to get rid of a demon was to exorcise it. I didn't do that. I got it out on my own. So... how?"

"I don't know, Shanie. But we're going to find out. Ok? And I promise no matter what happens, I'll be right there with you. Ok?"

Shane nodded. "Thanks, Dean."

"Course." Dean smiled and took a sip of his beer.

"Dean?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't call me Shanie."
