Wei Wuxian hadn't changed. He was still the kid he'd once been, despite the fact that he'd reached his thirties.
He'd been forced to draw a line under his past life in the orphanage to focus on his future. Once at college, socialization was hard. But against all odds, he had met someone, Chinese like himself. His name was Wen Ning. He was quite shy, and very nice. The two became fast friends and hung out together throughout their studies. They specialized in marine and seabed research. Once they had their doctorate, the question was how to find their first job. Wen Ning mentioned a distant cousin who had taken over his father's company, a private marine research site. So the two of them left New York for Shanghai and started work there.
But it was tough. Being the new kids on the block, they were stuck with all the dirty jobs and extra work. On top of that, Wen Chao, Wen Ning's famous cousin, kept making advances towards Wei Wuxian, which displeased him to no end. He clearly hated his boss, and they knew that Wen Ning did too, despite the fact that he said nothing. However, he had his friend and a rather tempting salary, which pushed him to stay.
This was how h(is life had turned out. He had never seen Jiang Cheng or Jiang Yanli since leaving the orphanage. At first, he thought about them night and day. He recalled many memories with them, of playing and laughing together. But before long, life took hold of him again, and he eventually turned his attention to his adult life. It had been 12 years since his departure, and he had finally turned the page.
When his alarm went off, Wei Wuxian sighed, telling himself ironically that it was going to be a good day. He got up and got ready in a hurry before getting into his car to drive to work, where a long, hard day lay ahead. That morning, the corridors were full of people. Most were having their coffee and waving to the red man as he passed.
-Good morning, Doctor.
-Hi Tao, what's up?
-Oh nothing, just the usual...
He laughed and continued on his way.
-Hello, Mr. Wei!
-Hi, girls!
After a few words with his colleagues, Wei Wuxian headed for his office. This was a place where no one ever lurked, so the redhead was surprised to see Wen Chao leaning against the wall, tapping his foot. When he saw Wei Wuxian, he moved towards him with a smile.
-À, there you are! I've been looking for you.
Wei Wuxian put on his best smile to greet his boss.
-Hello, Mr. Wen.
-I just had to see you! Remember that ocean exploration project I was telling you about? I really want you to work with me on it. I really trust you.
He continued his chatter while draping an arm around the red-haired man's shoulders, who was pretending to be very interested. When Wen Chao finally left, Wei Wuxian wiped his hypocritical smile off his face and blew him a finger, before heading for his office.
He slammed the door and slumped into his chair, turning on his computer without any motivation. Next door, Wen Ning, who shared the same office as him, stared at him in disbelief.
-You don't seem to be in the mood.
-Nah. Wen Ning, how can you live with a cousin like Wen Chao? I feel sorry for you.
Wen Ning smiled fondly and went back to his work.
-Pfff... Do we really have to finish yesterday's file? Please kill me...
He slumped down on his desk, then stared at Wen Ning who was writing.
-Wen Ning, tell me something juicy, I'm bored...
