Chapter 44

Valerie's Point of View

The ride to the hotel was a blur. I didn't know whose idea it was, or even when we'd decided to leave the party. One moment we were surrounded by music and laughter, and the next, it was just us—Jake and me—sitting in the quiet hum of a car, heading somewhere that felt charged with unspoken intent.

I didn't question it. I didn't need to. Somehow, we both knew.

The elevator ride up to the room was quiet, but the air between us wasn't. Jake leaned casually against the wall, his hands stuffed into his pockets, his green eyes on me with a focus that made my skin tingle.

"You ever think about where you'd want to travel?" he asked, his tone light, as if we were still at the party, chatting about nothing important.

"Travel?" I blinked, caught off guard by the normalcy of the question. "I mean... yeah, sometimes."

"Where to?" he pressed, tilting his head slightly. His voice was calm, but his gaze—it was different. Darker, more intense.

"I don't know," I said, suddenly feeling hyperaware of every word, every breath. "Greece, maybe? Or Italy. Somewhere with history."

"History, huh?" His lips curved into a small smile, but his eyes didn't lose their intensity. "Let me guess. You're one of those people who wants to climb all the ancient ruins and take a thousand pictures."

"Maybe," I said with a soft laugh, though my voice came out quieter than I expected. "And let me guess—you'd rather find a beach somewhere and forget about the rest of the world."

"Not always." He stepped closer, just slightly, and I felt my heart kick up a notch. "Sometimes it's not about where you go. It's about who you're with."

The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open. I stepped out first, my pulse quickening with every step down the hallway. Jake stayed close behind, his presence warm and steady.

When we reached the door to our room, he unlocked it and pushed it open, holding it for me. I stepped inside, the air in the room cool and crisp, carrying the faint scent of fresh linens. It felt surreal—walking into this space that was just for us, away from everything and everyone else.

I turned to face him, and he was already looking at me. The casualness from the elevator was gone, replaced by something heavier, something that made my chest tighten and my breath catch.

And in that moment, I knew this was it. What I'd wanted since that night at Mason's party last spring—the way his lips had crashed against mine, sending sparks through my entire body. I'd wondered ever since what it would feel like to have more, to give more.

Now, I was about to find out.

"I..." My voice faltered, and I bit my lip, feeling both nervous and excited.

Jake stepped closer, closing the door softly behind him. His eyes stayed locked on mine, and though his voice was calm, there was no mistaking the heat in his words.

"You okay?" he asked, his lips twitching into a small smile.

I nodded, swallowing hard. "Yeah. I'm just..."
