When Wei Wuxian opened his eyes, he saw nothing. A bag lay on his head. It seemed to be firmly attached to a chair, and he could hear voices coming from the distance. Seconds later, the bag was violently removed. He looked around him: it was an old warehouse. He stared at the criminal-looking kidnappers. Wei Wuxian must have looked pitiful. He was still in his bathrobe, which was half off, and his loose hair was a mess.

-Please be gentler. I just woke up.

In response, he took a huge slap. He made a huge noise of pain before looking at the man angrily.

-Are you out of your mind? What the hell do you want?

The man laughed and leaned against a pillar.

-We've been promised a huge sum of money in exchange for your capture.

Wei Wuxian's eyes widened. He had no enemies whatsoever, who would be so angry as to hire mercenaries to capture him? He tried to speak, but couldn't think of anything to say.

-Right, shut up. All you have to do is stay here until my client arrives.

-Can't you at least loosen this rope? I feel like my hands are going to fall off...

-Shut up if you want to stay alive.

Suddenly, Wei Wuxian had an irresistible urge to play.

-Do you want to kill me? If you've captured me, it's because your client wants me alive, isn't it? Wouldn't it be stupid to destroy your deal, incur his wrath and lose the money you promised?

The man became irritated. He walked over to Wei Wuxian and grabbed his jaw.

-You think you're clever, playing dumb like that? If you piss me off, I'll kill you. I hate people who talk down to me. One less case won't be worth your head hanging on the wall.

-Ah... It's not my fault you're weird.

The man hit him again before untying him, grabbing his wrists and dragging him off to who knows where.

-Alive or a bit damaged, it's all the same. I make the rules anyway.

Wei Wuxian wanted to laugh, but the situation left much to be desired. The man had clearly just said he was going to beat him up. The two arrived in a room containing dozens of sharp objects and torture machines. Now it was time for the red man to be scared. The man hung chains from the ceiling around his wrists and pulled out a tazer.

-Uh... Can we negotiate?

The bandit didn't answer and tased Wei Wuxian, who screamed in pain.

-It's not pleasant, is it? Let's see if I've got anything else...

He searched through his demonic objects when a huge crash stopped him dead in his tracks. Wei Wuxian turned towards the door to see what was happening. A man stormed in and double-locked the door.

-Boss!

-What's the matter now? Isn't the client here yet?

-The client, no, but a guy came in and knocked everyone down!

Wei Wuxian opened his eyes wide, suddenly taken aback. The boss grumbled before untying him and putting him on his shoulder.

-Let's get out of here," he said.

-Wai...!

The criminal climbed through the window and landed on the fine grass. He walked quietly to a car. He opened it and threw Wei Wuxian into it.

-But stay zen for a while," tried the red one. You look like you're constipated, you're so aggressive!

-Shut up, you!

He was about to close the door when a bullet lodged violently in his shoulder.

-Aaah!

Wei Wuxian widened his eyes and shifted his head to see who the shooter was. He was instantly dazzled. The man in question was tall and handsome, with long, deep-black hair and yellow eyes like burning embers. He looked muscular and really strong. Instinctively, Wei Wuxian jumped out of the car to join him. He stopped to greet him.

-thanks.

-So it's you, Wei Wuxian.

The conscript nodded before turning to the criminal leader, who had also drawn a gun.

-Fuck you...!

And, in a most graceful gesture, the handsome stranger threw himself at him and immobilized him in no time at all. The boss was thrown against the car with force, savagely damaging the bodywork. Wei Wuxian stood there in awe. He walked over to his savior and stared at him.

-Are you Hanguang-jun?

-Call me Lan Wangji.

Wei Wuxian smiled and took his arm.

-Let's go in. We need to talk.

Wei Wuxian finally led him to his home. He sat down, and his guest did likewise. Wei Wuxian ogled the white-clad man without the slightest embarrassment.

-I don't believe it.

-Don't believe what?

-That you're a fish. Either this spell is too good or you're lying to me! Do you understand me when I speak?

Lan Wangji sighed in despair and stared intently at his host.

-Yes, I understand you.

Wei Wuxian opened his eyes wide.

-So you're good at Chinese... Who taught you? Was it Jiang Cheng?

-No. I taught myself.

Wei Wuxian was astonished again.

-Why don't you show me what you look like in reality?

-I don't need to. We're on the surface.

-Pfff... You're no fun.

Wei Wuxian went to his room and grabbed an old sketchbook, yellowed by the years. He flipped through it and showed Lan Wangji a page.

-Jiang Cheng told me you looked like this.

The drawing showed a creature with long hair and a human-like upper body, but with tentacles instead of legs. Lan Wangji stared at the drawing.

-That's more or less it.

Wei Wuxian put his book away and sat back down. He was still puzzled by the white man's appearance.

-Trouble?

-No, no... Well, anyway! Playtime's over. We need to concentrate on Jin Ling.

-Mm.

-I know where he is, I'm talking to him secretly. It's easy to get in, but getting out undetected... That'll be something else. I don't know how.

The white man lowered his gaze and took a few minutes to think. Wei Wuxian stared at him, impatient. Then the white man turned back to him.

-Are you good at swimming?

-Yes, I can swim.

-Do you have someone else you trust who could join us?

-Yes, I do. I have a friend from college who works in the same office as me.

Lan Wangji stared at him steadily. Wei Wuxian chuckled. He felt as if the stare was piercing him.

-Are you sure we can trust him?

-Yes, I'm sure. We've known each other for over ten years. I trust him completely.

He smiled, and Lan Wangji continued to stare.

-Okay," says the white man, "I've got a plan.

Wei Wuxian smiles.

-I'm glad. But let's talk about it another time, shall we?

Lan Wangji raised an eyebrow.

-What's the meaning of this?

-It's late, we won't have time to think. There's a funfair nearby, and I'd like you to come with me. That way we can get to know each other, don't you think?
