Sophie Foster had always felt the weight of her secrets, but none were as heavy as the truth about her biological mother, Councillor Oralie. The knowledge was like a silent chasm between them, filled with unspoken words and hidden glances.
One evening, as the stars began to twinkle in the skies of the Lost Cities, Sophie found herself walking the familiar path to Oralie's residence. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of blooming flowers that surrounded the Councillor's home.
Oralie greeted her with a warm smile, though her eyes held a depth of emotion that words could never convey. "Sophie, my dear, what brings you here tonight?" she asked, her voice gentle.
Sophie took a deep breath, the words she had rehearsed suddenly vanishing. "I just... I needed to see you," she managed to say, her gaze falling to her hands.
Oralie nodded, understanding more than Sophie realized. She guided her inside, where they sat in the soft glow of luminescent orbs. For a long while, they simply shared the space, the silence comfortable and familiar.
Finally, Sophie looked up, her eyes meeting Oralie's. "I have so many questions," she whispered. "About you, about me, about us."
Oralie reached out, her hand covering Sophie's. "And I will answer them all, in time," she promised. "But for now, know this—you are loved, more than you can imagine, and nothing will ever change that."
Tears brimmed in Sophie's eyes as she felt the truth in Oralie's words. They didn't need to speak of DNA or the past to know that their bond was real. It was there in every look, every touch, every shared moment of laughter and sorrow.
As the night deepened, Sophie and Oralie talked of lighter things, of memories and dreams. And when Sophie finally left, the weight in her heart was a little lighter, the chasm a little narrower, for she carried with her the warmth of her mother's love, unspoken but ever-present.
