"I'm sorry Hyunjin did that to you."

In the empty family house of the Bae family, Suyeon's voice echoes through the living room as she tends to the area where Youngtaek had been punched. All the while, the Messenger of Death sits on the couch, feeling rather strange about the fact that someone's actually tending to him.

Nevertheless, he doesn't really say much about it seeing how Suyeon is still busy frantically apologizing for her friend.

"It's just that he gets really overprotective sometimes and it upsets him when people don't keep their promises. And I'm pretty sure that has something to do with Yunseo. I mean, you know what Ko Yunseo is like already, I'm sure. But please don't be too mad at Hyunjin!" Suyeon is almost begging at this point as she apologizes for Hyunjin.

Not that Hyunjin is around at the moment. He had gone to his own home in the district, giving Youngtaek another chance to watch over Suyeon... amd giving Suyeon the chance to do something he didn't even bother doing before he left.

"You're not... gonna hurt him, are you?" Suyeon finally finishes, asking hesitantly as she slowly pulls away the cold compression from Youngtaek's cheek.

Now Death has a chance to speak. And when he realizes that, he remains silent for a moment, thinking, and possibly scaring Suyeon with how ominous he's being.

But then the first thing he says is: "You know, you didn't really have to do all that. The bruise is going to heal quickly eventually."

Suyeon's eyes widen in response, before she feels a heat rising up her cheeks and she looks towards Youngtaek's cheek to see that the bruise had definitely disappeared now. "O-oh, really?!" she asks, completely flustered as she moves backwards, dropping the cold compress onto her lap in her surprise. "Oh, of course! Right, I should have asked..."

Apparently, she still has a lot to learn about grim reapers. And she might just really have to, otherwise she might end up dead or dangerously embarrassed like how she is now.

"Well... so I guess it doesn't really matter how beat up you guys get then? Cause it'll heal much more quickly than it does for... humans?" Suyeon asks as she sits properly on the couch beside Youngtaek. Though, it's still rather obvious that she feels awkward, perhaps something she's bound to always feel around this grim reaper.

Meanwhile, Youngtaek nods as he replies to her question. "So long as it isn't another grim reaper's weapon, we don't really get hurt by anything."

"Oh, but what Hyunjin did definitely provoked you, didn't it?" Suyeon mumbles under her breath as she wears a nervous smile, only to freeze when Youngtaek suddenly turns and looks at her. "O-oh... Did he hear?"

"It can get annoying to get hit for no reason, though," he then replies, making Suyeon flinch before he looks ahead again and leans on the couch. "But... Hyunjin did have a point. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have left you alone like that."

"I-It's okay, though!" Suyeon quickly replies as she shakes her palms. "I mean, at least nothing bad happened to me. I was completely safe all day!"

To that, Youngtaek didn't reply anymore, as he just lowered his gaze and thought about the current situation. Well, Suyeon sure does seem to always have questions about him, but what about him to her? Moreover...

"So what have you been up to while I was gone?"

"... Hmm?" Suyeon's brows rise when Youngtaek asks her a question all of a sudden. All of a sudden, it feels strange to her that the grim reaper would ever express any interest in her personal life, but then again... "He did share quite a lot to me already, didn't he?" "Well... I went to my brother's house for the meantime! Paid a visit and checked on my mom and see how she's been doing..." Her voice trails off, and Youngtaek turns back to her to see a sad smile on her face.

"How did it go?" He asks to keep her going.

Suyeon sighs in response, before she leans sideways against the couch. "Ah... I guess you could say she's doing fine with all the people around her... Just... she really misses Dad..."

Once again, Youngtaek just remains silent, nodding since it would probably be the only appropriate response he could think of giving.

Even as a grim reaper, he still could never understand the concept of grief. So what else exactly was he supposed to say or do here?

"Well, on the bright side!" Suyeon eventually continues as she forces a smile on her face, and Youngtaek looks back at her as he listens. "My brother's doing a really good job taking care of her, so I'm sure she'll be fine." She chuckles, and she looks towards Youngtaek only for her smile to slowly fade away at the sight of him. "Though... Of course, I hope she does just as well when I'm gone, too. She deserves better, really, but I'm just really glad she has other children to take care of her better."

At this point, Youngtaek doesn't even know what to do or say anymore. Clearly, Suyeon needs comfort, but what does he know about those things? As far as he knows, Hyunjin would be the best person to do that, so what could he possibly do? Unless, of course... he were to just ask...

"What do you usually do to make yourself happy?"

For the nth time, Suyeon is sent aback by the grim reaper's question, but this time, she just finds it silly upon realizing that Youngtaek really has a tendency to ask question that are out of topic. And so she laughs, but eventually, she realizes the point in his question, and she smiles at the thought of such an endearing suggestion. "Well... we can watch a movie."

"A movie?"

"What? You've never seen one before?"

"I... prefer not to immerse myself in the businesses of humans."

"Oh, is that how you got to your 'rank'? You must be such a workaholic, huh?"

"I'm not... sure what that means." Now Youngtaek is the one feeling rather awkward, and as he slowly feels the emotion, he becomes even more confused as he watches the young woman beside him talk like they have been friends for quite some time now.

She is strange. But what was so special about her that was making the Messenger of Death feel so many human emotions for the first time in his entire term? Is she really that strange?

"Well. Let's watch this then!" Suyeon eventually suggests as she finds a movie that catches her attention. "Pompoko. Ever heard of it?"

"No," Youngtaek replies, but his tone is much softer now as he watches Suyeon put the movie on in the TV.

"Then, it's best that you watch it now instead of never! I'm sure it won't disappoint as your very first." Suyeon's smile seems a bit more genuine now, and it brings a strange kind of comfort to the Messenger as she eventually returns to his side.

"Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to try something new." That's what crosses the Messenger's mind, all while he remains oblivious of all the new things he's bound to experience with this strange human.

In the end, he did like the movie.

One last exam tomorrow! It's a difficult one for me though so wish me luck! 😅

Hope you liked this chapter, too, by the way! At this point, I just accepted that <Death's Bow> is more of a hurt-comfort fic than a dark fantasy and thanks to one reader I've accepted the differences between this and <Not A Soul> so...

Thank you itsfall07!

Anyway, I hope you all have a great day again today. Love you, guys! ❤
