Brynn woke up to the sound of her brother singing. To describe it it was somewhere between a screeching bird and a dying walrus. To say he was musically challenged was an understatement. Brynn, threw off her covers and hopped out of bed. She hummed to herself as she got ready for the first day of school laughing to herself when Asher tried to hit the high note. She was all dressed and made up, in a pair of dark wash jeans and a white graphic tee shirt under a black leather jacket. She finished it off with her blonde hair in soft curls, the pink streak cutting through her golden locks like a river through the earth. She nodded to herself on a job well done before heading downstairs.

Asher was making eggs and bacon on the stove when Brynn hopped onto the kitchen counter, "Morning Ash," Brynn said inhaling the smell of the food that was cooking.

Asher looked at his little sister and immediately brightened, "Good morning Brynnie-Berry, hey can you grab me the plates while you're here?"

Brynn hopped down and opened the cabinet to pull out two plates for them. They sat down and ate breakfast. The morning of the first day of school was nice. The birds were chirping in the morning sunlight, and a soft breeze blowing in through the kitchen window. Unlike what would happen in the middle of the school year there was no waking up late and rushing out the door. Instead it was peaceful and the siblings got to enjoy each others company.

"First day of school, how do you feel?" Asher asked looking up from his breakfast.

Brynn swallowed her bite and mumbled, "Like any other day, but this one will just be filled with more idiots."

"I better not be on that idiot list." He joked pointing at her.

"Only sometimes." She grinned up at him.

"Promise me you won't do anything stupid."

"I won't do anything you wouldn't do."

Asher chuckled as he sipped his coffee, "That doesn't make me feel any better."

When they were done they plopped the dirty dishes in the sink. Brynn slipped on her beat up black combat boots and headed out the door. Asher wasn't too far behind her. He gave Brynn a quick kiss on her temple before slipping into his car and driving off to work.

It wasn't long before Brynn pulled up to Kaylee's house and honked the horn twice before Kaylee came rushing out, "Geez K, it's only the first day of school and you're already late?" Brynn joked as Kaylee slammed the door to her car.

"Oh shut up, Melanie was hogging the bathroom,"

"Well, she is a stuck up brat,"

"She's twelve,"

"Bitchiest twelve year old I've ever met."

"What do you have against my sister?" Kaylee asked checking her make up in the car mirror while Brynn drove them to school.

"There's the fact that she hates me."

"Since when do you care if anyone hates you?"

"Since the time she burned off my hair." Brynn snarled. She was sleeping over at Kaylee's house three years ago and she was barely out when Melanie held a candle up to her head and singed it. She had to cut off three inches of hair that was already two inches shorter because it was burned off. Melanie's been messing with Brynn plenty of times before that and that incident was the last straw. Brynn has avoided Melanie at all cost since then.

"That was one time, she was nine, and she said it was an accident!"

"Kaylee, I was asleep and she held a candle to my head."

Kaylee rolled her eyes before replying, "Ok so maybe it wasn't an accident."

"Duh."

"Don't even talk, have you seen your brother?"

"What about my brother?"

"He's just like you! You guys are practically twins!"

"Oh so you're coming at me now?"

"I'm just saying-" But Kaylee's sentence was cut short when a car darted in front of them and Brynn slammed on the brakes.

"What the heck?" The car was a nice sleek black truck. The only thing she saw through the widow of the car that whizzed past was a flash of brown hair. All Brynn could do was mumble about stupid drivers under her breath.

The first day of school was a bore. It was filled with get to know you games, class syllabi, and homework. Really, homework already? Brynn thought. She was sitting in class bored out of her mind feeling cooped up. She looked out the window at the soft blue of the sky, the intense green of the grass and the little patch of yellow where the grass was dying. She could see the leaves swaying in the wind and wished she could run outside with the wind blowing through her hair. The stuffy classroom made her head spin.

Then her stomach grumbled, Oh my God it sounds like a lawn mower. Brynn thought grabbing her stomach and looking around to see if anyone noticed it. Everyone was too engrossed in their get-to-know-you question sheets and catching up with their friends to bother noticing. Except one pair of brilliant blue-green eyes staring straight at her, as if into her very soul. She glared at the boy looking at her until he turned away quickly. She couldn't help her stomach and it was rude to stare. She looked down at her desk reading the questions on the slip of paper. Seriously She thought staring down at her sheet, I've been going to school with these losers since kindergarten. What more do I need to know about them? Then the gurgling of her stomach returned. It was the last class period before lunch and Brynn didn't understand how she could be so hungry. She had a great breakfast thanks to Asher. How was it possible for her to be as hungry as she was now? There was a loud ringing and students began filing out of the classroom. Thank God, Brynn thought as the bell rang signalling lunch time. She gathered her stuff and handed the teacher her question sheet before heading out the door, practically sprinting to get out of the suffocating classroom.

All of a sudden she was rammed into and all her books and papers spilled onto the floor, "You've got to be kidding me?!" Brynn shouted to nobody in particular kneeling down to gather her stuff.

"I'm so sorry," Piped a voice in front of her. Brynn looked up and saw wide apologetic blue-green eyes looking into her annoyed ones before they darted back down to the papers on the floor. He hastily gathered her books before getting up and offering them back to her. Brynn stood up slowly and took the papers out of his hands drawling out a thanks. The boy rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, "Um, I'm really sorry Brynn."

"It's fine-" Then it occurred to her she had no idea what his name was. She's seen him at this school before. In fact he was in her homeroom all of middle school but she was drawing a blank at his name, "Don't worry about it." She said instead moving past him to get her lunch. Why couldn't she remember his name? There she was, five minutes ago saying she knew all her classmates when now she couldn't even remember that boy's name. Why was this bothering her so much? She shook her head, deeming the boy unimportant. Instead she held her school books close to her and wondered why they felt so much lighter.
