Chapter 10 continuity...
"What about my parents??" I asked.
"They were very unhappy. They wanted a boy. They thought betiyaan ek bojh h(girls are burden). They wanted to give up on you, wanted to send you to orphanage. But I and your dadi convinced them to keep you. " My grandfather said.
"That's why they used to beat me up, torcher me, give me traumas. I was never their choice. But why did they send Dev to orphanage then??" I asked confusingly.
"Your parents were in financial crises. They couldn't provide enough for 4 people. So, they sent Dev to orphanage." My grandfather said sadly.
"I still dont understand. Why did they sent him to orphanage and not me. They hated me not him. He was my parent's favorite. Wasnt he?? Then why would they do that." I asked .
"They wanted to send you to orphanage. But I and your dadu stopped them from sending you away.
Well, the conditions were pretty critical that time. Either one of you had to go to orphanage. So, we chose you pari. We chose you to not go to orphanage. We can't lose you. Afterall you were the first girl after a lot of boys. And with that you were our whole world" My grandmother said.
I had a roller-coaster of emotions at this time. They didnt sent me to orphange because i was the first girl born or they really loved me a lot?!? I was hell confused. Watching my expression, my grandfather spoke, "We chose you over him pari. Not because you were first born but because tum hamare ankho ka tara ho (Not because you were first born but because you are the apple of our eyes.) Tum hamare dil k sabse karib ho. Hamari pari ke bina hum zinda lashien ban jaynge, itna pyar karte h hum hamari pari se.(You are closest to our heart. Without you, we are alive yet dead. We love our fairy a lot)"
I was overwhelmed by his response. Tears made their way out of my eyes. Finally I had people in my life who chose me over something else. I was really happy. I quickly hugged them and stayed in their embrace for a while.
I then asked them about my parents, "Are they still facing financial crises and what are they up to as of now?"
"We dont know pari. We broke every contact we had with them. They hurted our pari and anyone who hurt's my pari will have no relation with us, no matter what relation we used to share." My grandfather spoke.
Then we all three sat in silence. It didnt feel awkward , instead it was peaceful. But soon my grandmother broke the silence.
"Pari kya tum hamare Dev ko dhundh sakti ho?? Tum dono NYC me ho. To kya tum usse dhundh sakti ho??(Can you find our dev since you both will be at NYC)" My grandmother said with a voice full of sadness while tears came out of her eyes. Even my grandfather had sadness in his eyes.
I have not trusted dev yet completely. I dont know anything about him. I dont know how to approach him. I just can't go around him and say, ' Hi Dev this is your younger sister Kaira.I was the chosen child and as a result, I am the reason you went to orphanage' My subconscious mind mocked me with a sarcastic voice. I was not ready for this, but for my grandparents i would do anything. My grandparents are the two people, i would do anything for. So, I decided to find him for them.
