"You don't have to put up with that you know."

"Put up with what?"

"Her. Everything she's doing. You don't deserve that." Joseph was trying to look into his eyes but he couldn't look back. He'd had these thoughts many times himself but then always retreated back to wondering if he was wrong, wondering if maybe he did deserve it because no one else was going to put up with him. That's what she had always said at least. It seemed to be true. People didn't talk to him anymore. His friends. His family. It was just her, she'd always stayed no matter what.

"Maybe I do."

"Why would you think that? Even for one second, Jamie?"

"Why wouldn't I?" He pulled back and turned around to head over to the bed. "You never come 'round anymore do you? We barely talk." Finally, he dared to steal one glance at Joseph's face, his eyes, he looked exasperated as if what he was saying should be common sense. It wasn't. He didn't know what had gone wrong but it had been something and he was sure that it was his fault, that was for sure.

"You don't think there's a reason?"

"I do think there's a reason and I think the reason is me." He sat down on the bed and then laid back, choosing to look up at the ceiling. Anywhere other than the man who he felt for so deeply it was almost painful at times. Something that he didn't think he could ever say anything about because he didn't believe it would be returned. They had been friends, sure, but then it had stopped. Joseph had gotten busy, he had gotten busy, and Jess had become his life. His entire life. Now, he found himself alone in Paris, finally getting a break from her due to his blessed but hectic travel schedule. A bit of peace and quiet until he had shown up, knocked right on his door. When he'd told Joseph where he was going to be he didn't think it would end up this way. He thought he would be alone, he thought he wanted to be alone and he was still sure he was right about that.

"The reason is not you, Jamie." There was a loud sigh and then he felt weight on the edge of the bed as Joseph sat down next to him. A moment later, there was a hand on top of his. "You never noticed? Never even considered?"

"Considered what?" He sat up. "You're saying it's not me then?"

"Obviously it's not you, no one thinks that."

"No one? So people talk about this?"

"Are you serious?" He laughed and shook his head, "Jamie, I don't know what got you with that woman in the first place and quite frankly I don't want to know but there's nothing that says you have to keep doing this when you can do better."

"I can't do better, she's the only one who will put up with me I told you-"

"Listen to yourself. Put up with you? PUT UP. If you're saying that about your girlfriend you need to do some serious reconsidering you know."

"Then who else is going to do it? You?"

"Well I...maybe?"

"Get out."

"Jamie."

"I said get the fuck out." He pointed towards the door angrily, still refusing to look in Joseph's general direction. The offer couldn't have been serious, it didn't sound that way. There was too much hesitation and a bit of a crackling voice. Besides, he couldn't sit there and entertain ideas of the impossible. That was no way to live life, was it?
