One Little Happily Ever After
"Jeanes, pay attention!" the teacher snaps from right in front of me, making me jump. All I had been doing was sleeping; she didn't have to be so rude. And it's not like I really need to know the difference between meiosis and mitosis.
"Hmm, yeah?" I ask sleepily, not caring either way. Mrs. Danielson hates me anyways, ever since I accidentally set her computer on fire. Accidentally. I even apologized properly. She got a free one from the school; she should be thanking me for replacing that old piece of crap.
"This is Em-"
"Call me Emmy!" a stranger pops up from behind her. They have a hairstyle like a Mohawk, but it's flipped to the right. It's black at the top but near the ends it's blonde, looks really cool all in all. I wish my parents would let me do things; they're always too focused on what other people will think.
"Hi? I'm Devin." They shove their hand in my face and I shake it undecidedly. I'm unsure of what to make of this 'Emmy' person. They're a bit too outgoing for my taste; I usually stick to the burnouts in the back of the class.
"Emmy Grey, at your service!" they beam at me and I nod slowly. Mrs. Danielson usually doesn't like it when people whisper, let alone make a big scene like this. Maybe she's favouring this Emmy kid? There could be something a little off up in there, I could see that.
"Jeanes, you're supposed to show Em... Emmy around school." I raise an eyebrow at her sour face.
"Like right now?"
"Right now."
"In the middle of class?"
"Get outta my classroom before I give you a strike!" The smile that spreads across my mouth at that would be enough to make Jeff the Killer jealous. There's nothing better than getting permission to skip out of a subject that you hate, especially when it results with the look of death from the teacher that hates you.
"What's a strike?" Emmy asks as they follow me out of the classroom. They jump slightly and laugh nervously when the door slams shut behind us. "And why does she hate you?"
"Here, we have a strike system. Whenever you disrupt a class, turn in something late or whatever you get a strike. Every time you get three strikes you get detention." Their mouth forms an adorable little 'o' of understanding. "And Mrs. Danielson hates me because she had my idiot brother, Ethan, last year. Ever since I first walked into her classroom she's been giving me the stank eye. Funny thing is; even though I always sleep in her class, I always get A's."
"You get A's? That's so cool! I always have trouble with Biology...stupid scientists..." they pout and I cleverly disguise my laugh with a cough. They smirk and slap my arm lightly.
"So, you new?" Thank you, Captain Obvious. God, you're so bad at people. No wonder you're single.
"Yeah, I moved here last week but today is my first day." I nod.
"Cool, cool. Where you move from?"
"Munataka High, they're cool but kinda strict. They were a preppy private school; didn't like my style." I look at them and understand immediately. They have three visible facial piercings – nose, eyebrow, lip. Their style is definitely scary punk. With pins and patches and buttons and chains everywhere, black and plaids. I totally get it.
"Ahh, man I wish my parents would let me get that stuff! They're too obsessed with the idea of a perfect son," I roll my eyes. "They want me to be a jock and excel at everything. I mean, I do, but I hate sports so they're never satisfied. There's no way they'd let me dress the way I want if I can't even throw a football."
