'Do you have to give an injection?' Amarnath asks worriedly as the doctor pulls out a syringe.
'What do you mean?' Gauri looks at him in surprise. They are inside one of the classrooms, watching a doctor rub cotton on a baby's thigh and prepare the vaccination. Amarnath looks at Gauri and back at the baby and slips his hand into hers involuntarily.
'Are you scared of vaccines?' she asks suspiciously even as she happily clasps his hand.
'No, but ... kids will get hurt.'
He squeezes her hand, scrunching his face as the doctor injects the needle into the baby's soft skin. Gauri smiles, resting her head against his arm. You're hitting criminals and bleeding them out, but you can't see children getting vaccinated? Could anyone be more sweeter, Amar? I love you so much. She recalls the day she had called him her boyfriend only to get rid of Gagan. It's been months but it just seems like yesterday. And how much I've changed, she realizes with a long breath. At first, I thought he was the most boring and weirdest person on earth, then I decided there was nothing likeable about him, and now I'm madly in love with him.
The baby starts wailing. The doctor rubs the injected place and tries to calm it down. It doesn't stop.
Gauri winces at the loud wails. 'Amar, let's go out. This sound is so irrita-'
'Don't cry, gudiya. Come here, come here,' Amarnath lifts the baby and holds it up high, bringing it down and then again lifting it in the air. The baby forgets crying and gurgles happily at Amarnath. Gauri watches, open-mouthed.
'How did you do that?' she asks.
Amarnath smiles. 'Do you want to hold?' he holds the baby towards her.
'No!' she is horrified at the thought of the baby spoiling her embroidered pastel Kashmiri kurta.
'Amar, give the baby back,' she says and mutters to herself in displeasure. Who knows when it was even given a bath?...
Amarnath hands the baby back to its mother.
'You're quite comfortable with kids,' Gauri tells him as they return to her table.
'Who will not be?' Amarnath smiles.
'Me.'
He looks at her, surprised.
'I mean they're kind of cute and all, but I can't handle them,' she says honestly.
'It's not difficult,' he opinions.
Gauri nods insincerely. Of course, it seems easy-peasy for a few minutes. You'll know the torture when it's gonna be 24/7.
The doctors announce a tea break.
'Let's get out of here.' Gauri says.
