Prologue

As silent as the night, the assassin flitted from roof to roof heading towards the dark shadow of the keep. The guards on duty had been lazy seeming too tired to guard, risking the life of their Lord. Besides, the belief that their castle was impenetrable made the guards lazy and they regularly slacked off.

“What was the point of guarding an impenetrable castle?” they thought.

How wrong they were. The assassin had slipped past the guards patrolling the area and effortlessly scaled the steep walls instinctively finding foot and handholds in the brickwork. When he got to the top, he had managed to reach the rooftops of the town under the cover of the darkness.

Five minutes later, he reached the keep. It was a five floor keep with expertly trained guards at every possible entrance. However, the assassin knew that the Lord of the castle shut all the windows at night but, posted a guard behind every window in the building. The assassin ran up to the keep just before a patrol rounded the corner. He sank into the shadows his black assassin clothing rendering him invisible in the shadows.

The patrol didn’t see him so he didn’t feel any need to kill them. When they rounded the next corner, the assassin went into action. He got out a climbing wire which was basically a wire with a hook at the end and threw it. As the hook wrapped round the base of a window, the assassin drew a throwing knife. He then yanked on the wire pulling the window open at the same time throwing the knife. He guard never knew what hit him. Before his brain had time to react that the window was open, the knife connected with his throat. He choked on his own blood and crumpled to the floor.

Using the wire as a climbing aid, for the keep was much harder to climb, the assassin scaled it as well, leaping through the open window and landing silently in the corridor beyond. He took out a map and followed it to the Lords private chambers. There were two guards outside the door and his sources told him there were four more inside. The assassin drew two throwing knives and threw them in quick succession. The two guards died before their heads hit the floor.

The assassin drew a knife and walked into the room. Ten seconds later, it had all been over. The four guards and their Lord were lying dead on the ground. The assassin walked out down to the stables where his client would be waiting with the money.

“Is it done?” asked the client.

“Yes.”

“You done a good job, here is your payment.”

“Thank You.”

“What’s your name assassin?

The assassin hesitated briefly and then answered, “Ghost, my name is Ghost.”

Then, without another word, he walked off into the night.
