A knock was heard on Amber's front door about half an hour after she got home. With a groan, she got up and answered it.
"Yeah?" She said almost automatically, before her eyes went wide.
Boston stood in front of her, in his human form of course, holding a bouquet of flowers. He had a nervous smile on.
"Hi. I know you don't want to talk to me, but I think I can change your mind." He awkwardly stated, holding out the bouquet for Amber to take.
"I- No. I don't think flowers are gonna fix the fact you did that." Amber started to close the door, but Boston put his foot between it to stop it.
"It's not the flowers, these are just a gift. I grew and picked them myself. They're some of my finest. Not to flex of course." He chuckled.
"This best be important." Amber hesitantly took Boston's gift.
"Oh it is. It'll explain everything." He said, growing a smile. Maybe he could be redeemed if she was actually giving him a chance.
"Okay. Come in and sit. I'll let you talk." Amber moved out of the way for Boston to enter, and cautiously, he did. He got comfortable on the couch like it was his own home, and frankly, it basically was with how often he used to be over.
"Ah ah. Don't get comfy. My house, my rules." Amber sat elegantly on the couch across from him. With a sigh, Boston sat up and crossed his legs.
"Is this better?" He asked sarcastically.
"God, Boston. You look gay doing that." Amber pinched the bridge of her nose, shaking her head.
"I'm- a sitting position doesn't make someone gay!" He undid his legs and just sat normally. "Whatever. Hey if you're gonna be homophobic I'm not gonna explain. I don't like homophobes."
"I'm not homophobic! I just don't wanna give you a second chance if I find out you're into men and not women. I'd think it's just a waste of time."
"Well it's not. Because I am a hundred percent sure I like women. Because I like you. I love you." He smiled awkwardly. "The breakup thing? I felt terrible doing it! I adore you Amber, I feel my face get hot every time I even look your way!"
Amber wore a dubious look as she listened to Boston's plea.
"So why did you do it if you love me that much?" She asked, genuinely curious.
"Amber, my love, we are like Romeo and Juliet. Two star-crossed lovers, who are meant to be in our hearts... but not that in society's eyes." He carefully moved over to the couch where Amber was sitting and placed his hand on her's.
She looked a little hesitant, but she accepted.
"Why wouldn't we be meant to be? I mean... we're perfect. You love giving affection- I like getting it... You're thoughtful, I'm impulsive.. We're both the same age-"
"Amber." Boston interrupted with a serious tone to his voice. "Too early seen unknown, and known too late."
"Wh- huh...? What relevance does-"
Boston changed before her eyes. The green skin returned, his human nose shrinking into his cat nose, his green horns shooting through his hair, his feet retracting back into hooves; the cherry on top was the thump of his tail on the hardwood floor.
Amber's eyes widened as she couldn't believe what she was seeing.
"Too early seen unknown, and known too late..." Boston repeated quietly, carrying a saddened tone. "I figured I should tell you now, since... heh... I kind of already blew it, you know? What else is there to lose?" He smiled. It wasn't the happy kind of smile, it was the ironic kind of smile.
She took a moment to process everything. Looking at Boston from head to hoof. Feeling the bumpy texture of his scaly skin. Staring into his beautiful, beautiful, neon green eyes. They made sense now. It all made sense.
"Avery... he caught me like this. He used it against me, and out of fear of him telling you... I did what he said. And that was to-"
"Break up with me..." Amber finished as she continued to run her finger up Boston's arm. "This... I- You- You're a... l- lacey!" She could hardly even believe the words coming out of her mouth.
"Unfortunately... yeah."
"Unfortunately? You're absolutely gorgeous! I- I think I love you even more than before!" She wrapped her arms around Boston passionately.
"You- really think so?" Boston's face filled with white as his ears drooped down from embarrassment.
"I know so! This is incredible! Why would you hide such beauty from me? You're so... majestic... so..."
"Stop- stop... You're making me blush." He giggled, cupping Amber's cheek. "See... this is where I worry. I'm not like you, Amber."
"Of course not. But that's what makes you just the most... wonderful..." She buried her face into his chest. "I love you."
"Haha... I love you too... But I'm terrified that this won't work."
"This will work. It will. I promise it will." She looked up at him with sparkling eyes. "I'd say this makes you even more beautiful than when I saw you before. And oh, it explains so much."
"Well I'm happy it explains stuff..." He said with a sigh, hugging her back contently. "So, erm..."
"Yes, Boston, we're back together." Amber chuckled, knowing that was his question.
"But what do I do now? I mean, you were the only reason why I had to hold that human form..."
"Why not embrace it? Embrace the lace!" Amber giggled at the rhyme. "Embrace the lace! Hah! That's genius."
"Yeah, I guess I should... How do you think your mom would take this?"
"Your main concern is my mom? You really should be worried about my dad..."
"Haha so about that-" Boston got a little nervous. He had to tell Amber that Mr. Maxwell knew... but he was afraid that it would worry her.
"What...?" She curiously looked at him, confused as to why he was so worried.
"Your dad has known for years. He's in the-"
"LBCA. I know. He won't shut up about it... It's like he's obsessed or something." Amber wore a look of disgust.
"I- would say he's a bit... obsessive... over the topic. At least for a human." He mentioned hesitantly, trying to find a way to put it politely. "Your father is a respectable man though. I'd trust him with my life."
"Well, that's surprising to hear." Amber replied sarcastically, rolling her eyes a bit at the comment. "He's a people pleaser. And a dork."
"Maybe, but no more of a people pleaser than I am. I don't really have much room to talk." He shrugged. "Besides, the trait isn't too bad to have. It just depends on the situations it's present in."
"Anyway," Amber started with a sigh, "Let me get this straight. You broke up with me because that jerkwad, Avery, blackmailed you into it because you were afraid I wouldn't love you because you're a lacey."
"Absolutely correct." He chuckled a bit. "Thinking about it, I think it was... Kinda foolish."
"Maybe. But that doesn't matter, because now nothing can tear us apart, huh?" Amber slowly and subtly reached for Boston's hand and intertwined her fingers with his.
"Oh! Oh my!" Boston's face filled with white as he felt himself tense up. His ears pinned down.
"You like that?" Amber whispered intimately, using her other hand to caress his cheek.
"Maybe a little..." He admitted shamefully, averting eye contact. Amber made him face her once again.
"How 'bout a kiss? I know you're probably very touch starved since that little... incident."
"How about... more than a kiss." Boston released his hand from Amber's and held Amber's head up with the bottom of his hand. "Oh you are so... so.... Gorgeous..."
"Ah!" She lowered his hand and her head. "Now you're making me blush!" She buried her face in her hands to hide her cherry red blush.
"Ah ah ah!" Boston playfully forced Amber to reveal her reddened face. "I'm not leaving you alone until we kiss."
"Then bring it on, my prince." Amber pulled Boston in for a kiss, and Boston immediately melted into it.
The two passionately kissed- as disgusting as it was- and Boston surprisingly really enjoyed it.
The rest of the night, they had a sleepover. Amber apologized for doing what she did, and they did what they usually did just like normal, with the exception of Boston being... well, Boston.
