10- Trial

The next day, Wei Wuxian returned to work as if nothing had happened. His new gills posed no problem, as when he breathed with his mouth, they closed invisibly. He said hello to all his colleagues before heading for his office. He entered, all happy, and Wen Ning stared at him, wondering why he seemed so happy.

-If you're here, then everything's gone well," remarked Wen Ning. But why are you smiling so much?

-Because I've got a plan.

Wen Ning questioned him with his eyes, but Wei Wuxian waved him off. Then a subordinate entered the office.

-Mr. Wei, the boss is asking for you

Wei Wuxian straightened up and headed for the office, still smiling. Once in the office, he looked frightened and destroyed by the ordeal. Wen Chao was delighted.

-Ah, my little Wei Wuxian! If you only knew how much I missed you!

-Boss...

-Come here, so I can take care of you.

Wei Wuxian approached shyly, and sat down next to Wen Chao. As the boss approached, he knocked him down with a metal statuette from the desk. Wen Chao fell to the floor, unconscious. Satisfied with his work, Wei Wuxian began to rummage around. He searched every drawer for any evidence that Wen Chao was detestable. Finding nothing, he went to the computer and rummaged around. This device was a real gold mine. There were e-mails exchanged with criminals, evidence of embezzlement and swindling. Wei Wuxian printed everything out before leaving the office and running to his own. Once inside, he pulled Wen Ning's arm to encourage him to stand up.

-What's the matter?

-Come on! I've got the papers to send your cousin to jail.

Wen Ning opened his eyes wide and stood up. The two left work and went to the nearest police station. They filed a complaint against Wen Chao and showed the gendarmes all the evidence he had against him, and Wei Wuxian also gave his testimony, recounting all the details, omitting to mention the sirens. He had to recount the repeated rapes he'd suffered, showing the marks of violence that remained, but if that's what it took to convince the police, then he'd do it. Wen Ning also spoke of the threats, and of the infamous truths that had reached him and about which he had kept silent to be on the safe side. The policemen took all the information, before shutting themselves away in an office. A few hours of waiting later, the station chief came up to them.

-The request was granted. Wen Chao will be arrested for fraud, embezzlement, repeated rape and violence.

Wen Ning took a deep breath and entered the main courtroom. The court was packed, as many people wanted to attend the trial of someone as important as Wen Chao.

They had arrived. Wen Chao had been arrested. Now it was time for his cousin to take responsibility. Wen Ning took a seat next to Wei Wuxian, who had already arrived. The two looked at each other, then the judge clapped his hands.

-Show the accused in," he said.

The doors opened again, and two policemen escorted Wen Chao to his seat. Silence reigned for a few moments, then the judge spoke again.

-Good. Wen Chao, 34, owner of the Aqueo marine research company, accused of fraud, embezzlement, repeated rape and violence.

The trial began. Wen Chao's lawyer was very competent, but all the evidence against Wen was making him sound increasingly insane. Wen Chao kept shouting that he was innocent, that it was all a plot. After a few long hours, the judge turned to the witnesses. He asked Wei Wuxian to stand up and tell what he'd been through. Wei Wuxian stood up and stared at the judge. He wasn't afraid to reveal what he'd been through. He wasn't the only one being raped these days.

-After an incident, Wen Chao threatened me.

-That's not true!," shouted the accused.

-Wen Chao, you don't have the floor. Says the judge. Sit back down. Continue, Mr Wei.

-I said he threatened me. He said that if I didn't agree to have sex with him, he'd go after my best friend Wen Ning, here, financially.

-Do you have any proof of what you're saying?" shouted Wen Chao.

-The forensic police examined me and found tons of traces of blows and violence.

-So what?! What proof do you have that I did this?!

-Mr Wen!" shouted Wei Wuxian's lawyer. We have no concrete proof that what Mr. Wei says is true, but these traces and the surveillance cameras speak volumes.

-There are no cameras in my office," spat Wen Chao.

-There are in the corridor," contra the lawyer. There's no mistaking the signs. What's more, others have testified against you.

-Tsss.

Wen Chao bit his lip. The trial continued, and finally the judge delivered his verdict. 20 years' imprisonment and a 4,000,000 yuan fine, as well as the dismissal of the company, which was handed over to Wen Ruohan, the defendant's father and former boss.

As they left the courtroom, Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian hugged each other, jumping up and down. It was a great victory. They were finally free of Wen Chao.

-A-Xian, my uncle spoke to me earlier. He wants to give me the company.

-He does?

-Yes, he does. He said he trusted me more than Wen Chao and knew I'd do a good job.

-That's good then. I'm sure you'll make a much better boss than Wen Chao.

The two laughed a little. Then they got into the car and drove off.

-What do we do now? asked Wen Ning.

-We've got people to visit," replied Wei Wuxian.

The car continued on its way to an urban wasteland. The two friends entered the building and headed for the water. There, Jin Ling, Lan Suzhui and Lan Wangji were chatting quietly. Wei Wuxian took off running and threw himself at Lan Wangji.

-Lan Zhan!

Lan Wangji fell backwards, Wei Wuxian on top of him.

-Wei Ying. How did the trial go?

-Wen Chao got 20 years.

-Just as well. It's all over now.

Hearing this, Wei Wuxian lost his smile. Yes, it was all over. Which meant the newts would be leaving again. He straightened up to allow Lan Wangji to get to his feet. Jin Ling watched Wei Wuxian, worried. He could tell something was wrong.

-Wei Wuxian, what's wrong?

-Nothing... You're going to leave now, and that saddens me. That's all.

There was silence. Jin Ling tried to speak, but could not. Lan Wangji took Wei Wuxian and held him close.

-Wei Ying. We'll be leaving in two days. Let's spend the day together tomorrow.
