Ella was tired. She had just finished working out, and it had taken its usual toll. She was sweaty, she was panting, she was sore. It felt like she was going to collapse at any moment. But it was all necessary, or at least that’s what her mom said. Ever since Ella had graduated high school, she had been living with her mother, and she never forgot it. How could she, when her mom was so overbearing? It was her mom who forced her to undergo this rigorous exercise routine in order to “maintain her figure”
She clasped her waist. As tight as a drum and as slim as a stick. Of course it was! Ella’s mom wasn’t stupid. She knew how to impose a forceful routine, one that would keep Ella slim. It’s how she herself had kept slim well into her 40’s. But despite the effectiveness, Ella still felt empty. Well, maybe the emptiness was just the fact that she had nothing but a salad for breakfast and hadn’t had lunch yet. But she felt that it was something deeper, a longing. Maybe she was just missing dad again.
Back when her parents were still together, it hadn’t been this way. Sure, her mom had always given Ella a hard time about weight and health, but her dad was much more lenient. “Don’t be so hard on the girl” he’d say. And Ella loved him for it. Between the two of them, Ella maintained a healthy balance. She was a tad chubby, but far from overweight, and while her mother would fret over every pound and compare her to her much thinner younger sister, her dad would help balance it out. Things changed in her high school days, though. You see, Ella loved food. No, I really loved food. With her newfound freedom, a drivers license, and a part-time job at KFC, Ella blew well past “slightly chubby” territory. She began sporting a little belly, love handles, and a rounded-out face. Her friends and sister would poke fun, and her mom would freak out, but Ella didn’t mind. Sure, she’d have her insecure moments, but something about the extra weight on her frame was a little alluring, mysterious. It made her feel funny…
Unfortunately, this was also around the time that her parents separated. Mom won the custody battle, of course. Ella still got to visit her dad every once in a while, but the days of indulgence with him in the house, of extra meals, and of cakes and chocolates from the grocery store were over. Ella watched in horror as pastries disappeared from her pantries, replaced with protein bars, and as whole milk became skim in the blink of an eye.
With them vanished Ella’s burgeoning waistline, which shrunk faster than the portion sizes at family dinner. The stricter dieting imposed by her mother and the harsh exercise routine paired with it took its toll on Ella’s schedule, too. Goodbye free time to sneak off to KFC, hello chores around the house, and even more exercise.
Now, Ella had graduated. She was 18, a grown woman with rights. At least that’s what she wished, but while she remained unemployed and living in her mothers house, she was suffering the same overbearing attitude as ever. At least, with no school taking up her time, she had a little bit of free time to indulge in reading and relaxing in between the vigorous exercise. She had wanted to go off to college immediately, but her mother insisted on a gap year. “To establish good habits” of course.
“Ella Anderson, you get down here this instant young woman” Came a shriek from downstairs
Ella dabbed the sweat off her forehead and pushed her tired body up. She ran down the stairs. What could it be this time?
“What, Mom?”
“Care to explain this?” Her mom said, holding up an empty bag of McDonalds
Ella gulped. She hadn’t ordered that. She really hadn’t. “It wasn’t me, Mom, it must have been Alice”
“Yeah right, as if Alice would ever do something like this” Her Mom snapped back “I know a bad habit when I see one, you don’t want to go back to those high school days do you”
Ella groaned. “Ughhh, no, Mom, you don’t get it…”
“No excuses! You’re grounded, one week! I won’t have you slipping back”
“But-”
“No excuses! Up to your room now!”
Ella huffed. She was 18 now! While her friends were off getting jobs and moving out, her mom still treated her like a child. It was awful! But there was nothing to do… When her mom wanted something, she would get it. Ella stomped up to her room, slamming the door. She adjusted her pants, tightening them. Her waist had gotten an inch smaller, at least. And yet that only made Ella mad. Her slim waistline, it was more like a prison that her family and society trapped her in. She fumed. Something had to give.
